Didn't need insurance, used a venue that probably already had... which is why sometimes DIY venues aren't always the most cost effective option...

We used WedSafe. Our venue has liability insurance but it didn't cover everything we wanted covered, so we got some extra coverage for like a hundred fifty bucks that we're happy with.

Also just used Wedsafe for liability and cancellation. My dad also checked with his home/auto insurance people but they were unable to help.

Wedsafe or Wedsure are both great options. The are relatively inexpensive for the amount of coverage you get (and it covers you for things that your venue's insurance policy doesn't).

So maybe this is a dumb question, but why do you need wedding insurance? I didn't even know that was a thing.

@Charisa--liability and cancellation insurance are two common components of wedding insurance. Liability insurance protects you in the event that a guest gets too drunk and breaks something, for example. Cancellation insurance protects you in the event that your wedding doesn't happen.

It covers a variety of things (cancellation due to weather, liability for alcohol consumption, destruction of property, medical coverage for guests, etc). Please, please, please keep in mind that your vendors policies cover them, not you. For example, a venue policy will cover them if something get destroyed due to nature, but if your guest puts a hole in a wall, the venue will come after you.

@jewles, I don't think this has much to do with whether you have a DIY venue or not-the insurance your vendors have covers them, not you. If your guests destroy something, they can come after you for it. And cancellation insurance, as PP have said, covers you in case a vendor leaves you hanging.

I mainly got my insurance (from Wedsafe) in case the cake gets dropped, the MUA is MIA, a dress gets ruined, ect. It helps cover expenses for last minute disasters-- mainly just gave me some peace of mind.

Also, we are doing a host bar with our own bartender so the venue required some kind of liability insurance.

This may be silly too, but if a vendor leaves me hanging the day of, what can having insurance do to help me at that time?

@Ayesha, that day nothing other than making sure you aren't paying for that vendor. But hopefully you vetted all your vendors and they are amazing.

Glad I saw this post, turns out my venue doesn't have liability insurance so looks like I'll be getting my own!

We went through our normal insurance agent/company where we get our car and renter's insurance (State Farm). It went really smoothly and wasn't too expensive.

These 3 were recommended to us by our venue:

    www.theeventhelper.com

    www.wedsafe.com

    www.rvnuccio.com

We will be using our current auto/renters ins (state farm). My venue used to require you to pay for a cop if you are going to be serving alcohol but now they just require liability ins. When I last spoke with them it was going to cost $50 for a 250k policy I believe.

Did any of you see the story about the planner in Florida who took her clients' money and didn't bother to book any of the vendors?

Or remember Rebar closing with dozens of weddings on the books?

That's why you get it. In addition to the dozens of other things that can happen.

I don't know about in the USA but in here most people get it incase something happens one of your suppliers, like the venue closes or if there is an illness and the wedding has to be cancelled.
