Wedding insurance

Clarissa, on March 24, 2020 at 11:32 AM Posted in Planning 0 7
Reading all these post about having to postpone weddings and not being able to reschedule or venues going out of business or keeping funds makes me nervous. COVID-19 is making me nervous as well. I’m wondering how many people have wedding insurance and if it’s helping you. Planning on booking my venue as soon as the stay at home ban is lifted. Wondering if we should get it.

If you're looking for insurance that covers COVID-19, you unfortunately will not be able to find it. Insurance companies are now referring to it as a preexisting event that they will not cover. If you're looking in general, I would say that it wouldn't hurt to get. We are required by our venue to have insurance for our event. We'll probably be going with WedSafe when we get a little closer.

Not getting married until next year so hopefully COVID-19 will be over and done with. I’m just wondering if it’s helpful or not.

We purchased insurance for e v e r t h i n g! God forbid something happens; an issue in your family, you fall ill, another freak pandemic. Especially when you're spending such a significant amount of money. Better to err on the side of caution

I do have it (issued by Nationwide although I purchased it thru an affiliate of Progressive called Event Helper). I’m trying to decide between an outright cancel and postpone. I’ve been told my insurance MAY cover this event (but honestly unless my venue is under a direct order not to conduct business I’m not holding my breath). Ive asked for some clarification on what is covered but keeping getting not direct answers. I was told if I file a claim and it’s denied, coverage ends and then I’m up a creek. But if I don’t file a claim and do end up postponing they could transfer my policy to cover the new date. But they will not issue any more policies currently. Luckily my policy was written to not cover preexisting conditions as of the date I purchased (which was last fall) so this virus would be covered since it wasn’t known then.

So right now the way I see it, unless you’re in one of the declared stares of emergencies where people are ordered to stay home the insurance is going to deny your claim and treat your cancelling as voluntary. My wedding is April 11th so I’m waiting to see what happens in my state the next few weeks. I just don’t want to preemptively risk filing a claim and lose out of things do take a turn.
Long post but I figured all my research might help someone else. I’d be curious if anyone else has any different results.

That’s what I was thinking it’s better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.

Yeah I’m in a stay at home state and non-essential businesses were ordered to shut down. I appreciate all your insight and I too hope this might help someone else.

We have to have event insurance for our venue, however currently if you don't already hold a policy most insurance places aren't offering any kind of cancellation insurance for now.
