Wedding in Cuba?

Private User, on January 16, 2015 at 11:04 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

Has anyone from the US had a wedding in Cuba? My Fiance and I are thinking of having a wedding in Cuba in 2017/2018 if US sanctions are lifted. If not, we may claim religious reasons and host our wedding there anyways! Just looking to see if anyone else has claimed religious reasons to host a wedding there?

Until this week, US citizens were not allowed to be in Cuba

I think that they lifted the sanctions for cuban american's, so that they are now ( or soon) will be able to visit family members. You can always check with a travel agent, i would think that they should be up to date on the travel laws

Sanctions are lifted! Fights are being planned as we speak. I just text FH & said we are planning a trip soon!

I grew up in Miami & have been wanting to go forever!

Why would you want to get married in Cuba? Just curious. But, it Looks like you have a long time to plan.

I'm Cuban american. I heard sanctions HAVEN'T been lifted. Only religious, family, journalism or legal matters. And for personal reasons I wouldn't want to get married in Cuba. I do have family over there, so I can fly over to see them. Knowing Cuban government, they'll try to screw you one way or another.

FH and I wanted to go for our honeymoon and I spent time looking into it. DESPITE what you hear on the radio, as of now American can travel to Cuba but only with a licensed tour group. Among other things, recreational activities like going to the beach and snorkeling/Scuba are off limits to these groups. Maybe in a couple years it wont be as restricted, but those are some of the details as of now

Maltese is right... the licensed tour group requirements are still in effect. My understanding is that what has changed is that travelers no longer need to apply for a license to go beforehand so from a monitoring perspective it will be d@mn near impossible for our gov to enforce the requirements. That said, I seriously doubt you would want to ask your wedding guests to break the law and risk fines in order to attend your wedding.

Legal issues aside I think your bigger deterrent would be infrastructure/accommodations will not be in place yet. Its not like they have a plethora of 5 star resorts down there. I was just reading an article with quotes from hotel owners down there about how Americans are hard to please and they don't take it well when things happen like unexpected water outages. The author of the article went on a test run of a new tour that will be operated and there was a dead cat in the bathroom at one of the hotels they stayed in. Not exactly romantic.

I visited Cuba in November as part of tour. Americans still have to prove people to people activities for a Cuba visit so its not yet apropos for a wedding. I think you would have difficulties planning--most of the hotels are not equipped for a wedding.

There are cruises that go to Cuba that may be able to help--Phathom.org and Cuba Cruise are 2 cruise lines that take Americans.

I'm Cuban-American, and my American fiancee and I are also planning to get married in Cuba as well. So far the best way to get married in Cuba is if you stay at one of the many all inclusive resorts that offer wedding packages. So far Paradisus Varadero is one of our favorite . The good thing about getting married in a resort is that you dont have to worry about anything and you can even stay for free if you bring enough guests ,the con is that your options are limited. You can buy your vacation / wedding package from one Canadian travel agency and flight to Cuba from there. However , there are also many wedding planning private companies in Cuba that can also customize your wedding ( higher price ) but they are awesome with a very personalised service. Hope this helps and good luck
