Wedding guest horror stories?

Mrs. RATR, on October 1, 2015 at 3:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 36

I was inspired by Maltese's post (I think that's who it was)--as a guest, what have you learned NOT to do at your wedding? I was at a wedding once where the groom got waaaayyyy too raunchy with the garter toss so it totally turned me off to that tradition even though I know FH would never be gross like that.

The awkwardly long make out session instead of a sweet, short kiss after you say "I do". I can't stand it when the bride and groom are practically making out in front of everyone...it is so awkward...LOL! So, we kept our kiss really short and sweet! =)

There was a discussion not too long ago about this. It was really funny... some of them got published in the WW fall look book.

Mine was when I was a BM in a wedding, they self DJ'd and a younger guest got hold of the iPad and put an unedited version of "Get Low" on during dinner. "To the window to the wall till the sweat drops down..." did not go over well with some of the more conservative members of the family in the room.

Same with the garter toss it went wayyyyy too far. My FW even jokes with me and says she's going to take mine off with her teeth and it grosses me out!

@Elizabeth my husband purposefully put that song on half way through the night not remembering how terribly dirty it is. The look on my cousin's face when she realized what the lyrics were, she put her hands over her 11 year old's ears. Luckily she was the only child in attendance but I ran to the DJ and asked that he change the song immediately. Whoops.

I went to a wedding in the middle of the summer ouside... very humid and 90 degrees. They had no music for walking down the aisle and played music on an ipad speaker (they did not know that the venue did not have speakers outside and the ones inside ended up not working.....) Also the fact that everyone but the grooms mother was dressed semi formal. (last minute the bride bought a real wedding dress so the grooms mother was the only one who knew the last minute atire)

That taught me to always ecept help from family, dont do any last minute drastic changes and have a back up plan if possible)

I wouldn't do a really long gap. It's not fun for guests.

I would never have a wedding at a vineyard in Sonoma California and run out of white wine. Yep...that happened. And we were only halfway through dinner meaning no more white the rest of the night and the rest of the wedding was close to a $100k budget (I looked up the venue online later). So for $100k if you can't even give people enough alcohol I won't be happy. And I'm the kind of girl that usually just has one drink at a wedding anyway and maybe one alcoholic drink a month so I'm not even that crazy about drinking. But I was at a wedding in wine country, I wanted me some wine!!!

We were at a wedding where the maid of honor changed into Victorias Secret pajama shorts and a sweatshirt with flipflops IMMEDIATELY after the ceremony was over. What? This is not a pajama party.

Also went to another one where the bride's brothers dressed up like rednecks in overalls and did a skit where they were her "ex boyfriends" during the reception..I don't think she knew that was planned, and it was really awkward.

I went to a wedding where there was not a DJ, only karaoke. No one there was more than a decent singer and that even down graded after people had a few drinks. My ears still won't forgive me for not leaving immediately.

I was at a wedding with no assigned seating at the reception, not even for the wedding party. It was a mess with 100+ people. I took the time to do a seating chart for mine even though it drove me insane.

I posted about this once - but, I basically got kicked out of a wedding - I think......

I went to a wedding. (2 hours away from home, got a hotel, sitter, etc) Apparently the groom was marrying into some sort of Amish family. I didn't know the bride. (I was friends with the groom from HS/college days) Note - there were no mutual friends at the wedding. We didn't know anyone but the groom, and some of his family members that I did know very well - were NOT in attendance.

During the reception I was asked by a family member to change out of my pretty modest black dress into something else to "cover up"(Everyone at the wedding had on head to toe black if I remember, legs and arms weren't showing)

We went to a nearby mall and I bought a new outfit. Returned. No one spoke to us, and the same lady that asked me to "cover" up, came up to me and said, something like, "you best be leaving now"... It was weird. End of story.

At my first wedding, a 70- year old woman caught the bouquet. When it was time for the groom to throw the garter, all the men watched it fall to the ground. He threw it a second time, same thing happened. Finally, he picked up the garter and placed it in the hand of one of his friends. We had it on video. It was pretty embarrassing to watch, all of their heads following the garter to the floor!

@JamieLynn, I remember when that all happened! That was one of the craziest wedding stories I've ever heard, so sorry that happened but it is really funny now! I just couldn't believe you even bought a new outfit for them and they still kicked you out!

Went to a wedding where the bride and groom failed to mention that the wedding was outdoors. In February. In Nebraska. Needless to say I froze my ass off. They started really late too and once they got there it was a full 45 minute long ceremony. Afterwards we went to the reception where they had a honeymoon fund jar set up on the cash bar and by the gift table. They made reference to said jars as well in their thank you speeches. Bride and groom ordered pizza for dinner that was delivered after dinner had officially started. Bride then checked to see how much had been put in the honeymoon jar. When she saw no one was donating she freaked out and the couple took their gifts and left. Their parents were mortified by their behavior and shut the entire thing down by 8ish.

Oh, and we can't forget the Christmas Eve wedding we had last year. We had about 3 weeks notice of the wedding when the bride's father told them that while he'd be happy to give them around $5,000 he was not footing the bill for everything they wanted, especially since it was looking to end up around the $30,000 in the end. We ran into the bride and groom at the store last about a week before the wedding and they let us know that they expect to be pretty tight on cooler space so if we want to keep our drinks cool we'll either need to bring our own cooler or put our drinks in the snow. FH looked extremely confused so they decided to tell us that the reception is BYOB, but that they'll be providing cupcakes and a cheese and cracker plates. From conversations FH had with them it boiled down to them being annoyed that her dad wasn't paying so they wanted to go as cheap as possible. When speaking they referenced the amount that her dad had given them but said "the amount he wants to contribute was insultingly small since I'm his one and only child". Later the couple decided that they would DIY the catering after receiving objections from her parents. I asked if I could bring my own meal as I have severe food allergies. The bride said this was tacky of me and that I'm just seeking for preferential treatment, when in fact I just don't want to be jabbed by an epi pen on Christmas Eve. The ceremony was outdoors, but they at least kept it short before having everyone go into the garage. The bride's thank you toast included a jab about how her father less than graciously agreed to gift them a laughable amount to "make all this possible". Dad ended up getting pissed and said something about how she had no problem cashing the check and walked out. We stuck around for a little bit before heading home to go visit family. We never actually made it out of town to see our families. FH ended up with food severe food poisoning and ended up spending Christmas day and night in the hospital as a result.
