Wedding Guest Dress

Weddinglover1991, on July 6, 2018 at 5:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

Hey all need help decided what to wear to a wedding I am going to in a few weeks. The invitation says Black Tie but it starts at 4:00 pm on a Sunday. Furthermore, we cannot take off Monday so will be training there and back the same day. That means whatever I wear has to be able to survive a few hours on the train. Any advice?

Cocktail dress or dressy pants outfit. I suspect that they don't actually understand what a black tie event is and just want people to look fancy

If it's at 4pm it's not black tie-- which is a level of service and not a dress code.

I would say anything from a cocktail dress to a gown is fine.

Usually if an Invitation says Black Tie, it means Gowns and Tuxedo! My sister just went to one last weekend and, that's what everyone wore. Hope this helps.

Black tie is a dress code. It is less formal than white tie. It usually applies to events after 6.

Doesn't sound black tie to me. Black tie is a level of service and a dress code. Just look dressy. Is it a Jewish wedding? A Sunday wedding that's black tie could be Jewish.

I’m going to a wedding in August and the invitation said “ black tie optional” so I’m not really sure if it’s black tie or not .. but this is the dress I decided to wear lol

It's possible to have a black tie event with a late afternoon/early evening ceremony so long as the reception begins at 6 p.m. or later. A long formal dress would be appropriate.

You’re not supposed to wear a tuxedo before 6pm so saying black tie for a 4pm ceremony is incorrect.

It is a Jewish wedding, does that make a difference?

I think because it's a Jewish wedding, it explains why its on a Sunday and at that time, and thus disagree with a few posters here who are assuming they don't know what black tie means. I would definitely dress formally for this...normally for black tie, it means women should wear gowns. Possibly travel in more comfortable clothes and have your dress in a garment bag and bring with? If you decide to go with a cocktail dress, make sure its on the more formal side rather than the casual.
