Wedding Gown Length

Jan N., on October 6, 2017 at 5:38 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 13

I was wondering what everyone's experience was regarding the length of their gown.

My dress came in and this week I went to try it on at the shop and found that it is really long. When I tried on the sample, I was wearing flats and the dress was about 3" too long. So....I bought lovely 3" heels for my day. I was so disappointed that my dress is still at least 3" too long even when wearing the heels. Luckily, I already have an alterations appointment next week.

I'm 5' 5" and did ask when my dress was being ordered if there were different lengths available and was told no...that I should expect to be spending at least $400 to have the gown shortened.

Is everyone else having to deal with their dresses being too long?

Mine was definitely too long when it came in. I think that's pretty standard. The seamstress hemmed it to fit me

Mine was too long and I am 5'8. Wearing flats. My consultant told me if I wore short heels it would work, but it wasn't worth it to me.

Thanks to all...My alterations appointment is not at the shop I bought the gown at. I'm going to go to a shop that has excellent reviews for alterations.

I ordered mine hollow to hem (basically they make it specifically for your height) because I was worried about the lace pattern getting screwed up if they had to remove the lace and replace it to hem it. This was my dress though- the lace continues from the waist so there isn't a good place to cut the lace and make it shorter. Luckily the dress did come in to exactly the length I needed with the shoes I am planning on wearing.

ETA hollow to hem, thanks @Rachel!

Mine was too long as well, but it was only $150 to shorten it.

Lovely dress @Angela! ***...@****...** dress has lace detail and they quoted $400 to hem and another $200 to take in the bust and put in bra cups. This shop has very poor reviews for alterations...so I've opted to go to a well regarded alterations shop instead.

Thanks, @Jan! Good luck with your dress. I took mine to be altered at a well regarded alterations shop as well. I felt more comfortable there and it was more convenient. It'll work out, no matter what!

Mine has a suuuuuuuper long train. It might have been beautiful for photos but it wasn't practical at all. I had the seamstress cut it off. I definitely didn't pay that much tho - there were a few alterations other than chopping the length and it cost $250 total. Can you find a different seamstress for quotes?

Mine was too long also. I'm 5'1 and they took a good 5" off. That's crazy though to pay $400 to have it hemmed. I paid $300 for all the alterations and another $100 for the bustle.

Thank you all for your comments! I now feel better knowing everyone has to shorten their dress significantly. I have a lot of layers that all need to be shortened, but now am confident now that it will all work out. FH says I should stop fussing about the cost...it will all be okay. Here is a pic of my dress...I'm considering having the train shortened while I'm at it.

Edit...So sorry my post duplicated many times!

I think most people would need to do their dress' hem. My friend is almost 6' and even she still has to hem her dress. But for my dress, I was able to order 3" shorter and I don't have to hem the dress.

I'm 5'10 and the bridal boutique advised me to order extra length. I declined and the regular length dress was still too long. I ended up buying 4 inch heels so I wouldn't have to have it hemmed and the length was perfect.
