Wedding Gifts?

Mel, on April 20, 2021 at 2:28 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8

Hello. Fiance and I are paying for everything at our wedding, venue, cake, dress, church, dj, EVERYTHING. Anyways our wedding got pushed back from last year to this year and we never did any registry stuff because we thought that it wasn't necessary. People keep telling us to do a registry but as you can see, we like to pay everything ourselves. My mom suggested, maybe we could have like a little box at our reception, where if people want to drop of cards (cash), they can do so. Never thought about it, or if it looks too "needy" Any advice? If so, any box ideas?

Thanks.

Keep in mind that guests will give you something and it’s rude to decline. If you don’t have a registry, people will bring gifts you don’t want since not everyone gives cash. It’s not about looking needy, it’s about accepting things graciously.
Paying for the wedding yourselves is completely irrelevant.

Every wedding I have ever been to has had a card box. You don't need to register, and guests will default to cash (or checks). Most people want to give the couple a gift. Having a card box doesn't make you look needy. It helps the guests know where to put the envelope instead of having every guest come to yoi individually to hand you their card.

We had a subtle box to hold cards near the entrance of the venue. This is very typical at every wedding I've ever been to.

Yes to all of this. And also, paying for your wedding yourselves isn't relevant to whether or not people will give you gifts.

If you do not want gifts of any kind, you should tell your parents and your BP to (quietly) get the word out. People are likely asking them for a registry anyway.

Even when you say this, people will give gifts. Most cultures see weddings as a gift giving occasion, to celebrate the new 'family'.

We completely forgot a card box, but our venue created one, and took care of them until the end of the night.

I applaud you for doing everything honestly yes for a card box. People want to leave something for you it’s better than them coming be like here.

Ours is behind our sweetheart table. Having a registry helps a lot because then you can get something you want. It doesn’t have to be most expensive or anything. Serving spoons, forks, etc stuff you will use and would break over time always good to have extra. I had one friend who gave me utensils not on my registry and honestly wouldn’t be able to use them ever since it looks like the handles are so big and wooden it’s like um thanks for the gift but I got 3 sets of utensils I will never use them. (Since I picked out the ones liked and ordered smaller set and a bigger set so I wouldn’t need to buy it until way way later if that)

I wouldn't put a card box at the entrance. I've heard a few stories about how those card boxes get stolen. I'd think about security. What about putting it at the back of the room near where you or family are sitting?
