Wedding Gift Check

Sara, on August 2, 2021 at 9:47 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

Hey everyone! So I'm a little stumped on what to do. My fiance's uncle and his family gave us a very generous gift through check. They will not be attending the wedding, but I have already written a thank you card and plan to send it out this week. My 2 questions are, if the check was made out to both our names, are either of use able to cash it or do we both have to be present? We bank at different banks.

The other questions is, as a guest, do you expect your gift checks to be cashed immediately? I'm trying to figure out if we should wait until after our wedding to cash it, or if people prefer the couple to do so as soon as possible?

Thanks for any advice!

Check with your bank, but if it is made out to the both of you - either one of you can cash it. Also I do expect the check to be cashed a few days after the wedding, within the first week after - no more than 2 weeks after.

Since your wedding is still a month away I probably wouldn't wait that long to cash the check. Everyone I know who still uses checks expects them to be cashed within 1-2 weeks of someone receiving it.

Either of you should be able to deposit it. I'd expect it to be cashed right away.

I would expect it to be cashed right away. I’d just call and confirm with whichever bank you’re depositing it into that you’ll be able to do so without the other person. My bank had no issue with only one of us being present to deposit the checks, but when my ex and I got married, his bank gave us a hard time about depositing the checks without us both present.

Either one of you should be able to deposit it. I would do so ASAP, especially if it was a high amount people prefer checks cashed quicker so it isn’t sitting in their bank account and randomly gets withdrawn a month later.

Sometimes if a check says “and” it will require both names to be signed (we had one or two come back for a second signature), but generally it should not be an issue. We did mostly mobile depositing or ATM depositing and that made it super easy!

I always expect a check to be cashed right away and I hate it when people let them linger for an extended period of time— messes up my balancing ! Or I forget that I need to keep leaving the extra cash there 😳

I would suggest cashing it sooner rather than later. As for depositing/cashing it just make sure the name of the person doing that is correct on the check. We got a few checks before the wedding and most of them had to be cashed by my husband because they were made out to "Husband and Wife Husband's-Last-Name". Since we weren't yet married I still had my maiden name. Since my ID and everything else didn't match my name on the check I wouldn't have been able to cash or deposit it.

    Banker here!

As far as you guys cashing/depositing the check, it depends how the check is made out, if the check says Your name AND his Name, then legally it would have to go into an account with both of your names listed. However, you can check with both your banks, the bank I work at makes an exception if both of you go together to deposit/cash the check so they could verify the endorsement on the check. If the payee line stats Your Name OR his name, then either of you are able to deposit it. However, if the check is made out to your married name (if you're taking his last name) you would need to wait till after you complete your name change to deposit (tho some banks my make an exception banking laws are very difficult to make exceptions for every situation)
