I started like 3-4 months after we got engaged. I think it depends on how picky/indecisive you are. My engagement is just under 2 years and I knew it was going to take me a while. New styles come out every season, so that's something to keep in mind too. Ordering the dress is different. Once you choose one, I'd ask the consultant or someone at the store when a good time to order it is based on when you need it.

A lot of stores say to allow six months for your dress to come in - I would say to start looking a year out (which is what I did). Enough time so that you can look around as much as you want to, but close enough that styles won't change that dramatically.

I did mine about 9-10 months out. I want to be safe that it’ll be here on time. A year out is a good idea as well. Good luck! It’s so much fun. Smiley smile

    CONGRATULATIONS!
I agree with the above, at least six months before the big day to allow for alterations and once you finally get the dress back and all should be perfect - you might even still need another fit if you might have lost some stress weight.
I suggest looking online to get an idea of the silhouette style and fabric preference before you go (but try on every one you like anyway when you get there for your appointment!!!🤗) and then call and ask if they carry that designer or style!
Good luck and have fun planning!!

I would go no later than 8 months before your wedding. It looks like you are doing June of 2020 which may be a busier time. I would plan on going in September. The last thing you want is to order your dress over a year in advance and then change your mind with no options.

Congratulations on your engagement.!!! I would first go on the web and see what different type wedding dresses you like. And than I would go to a couple of bridal stores and try on all the wedding dress that were choosen from the web This way in your heart you will know you did not settle on the first dress you tryed on. And by starting the wedding dress process now will guarantee your dress will be ready for your wedding day.

9-15mo out. Remember fittings can take time.

Go and try on EVERY style. And that includes material: lace, taffeta, bling and non-bling. As well as colours: white, ivory and ones with a small amount of colour somewhere.

It really depends on when the wedding is going to be! I got engaged in November of 2018 and we then set a date and reserved our venue for September 14th 2019. I found my dress in January, it arrived in March, and we will begin alterations in June! I could have waited probably another month or so to get the dress but wanted to start the search soon incase it took me a while to find one! I would say your first step is going to be to decide when you want to get married and that will help you set up a timeline for the rest!

I'm getting married next June. I'm going to my first dress appointment this week. I have no clue what I want or what will look good on me.

So, I figured I better get started. I feel like I will feel more accomplished and ready once I have my dress...the other things will hopefully fall inline.

Good luck! Happy shopping and planningSmiley smile

I'd say book your venue first, if you haven't already. They book up quickly, especially in June.

Congrats! A wedding dress can typically take 6-9 months to arrive (mine took 8). An ideal timeframe to start is a year before your wedding. You can start earlier but I wouldn’t buy if you’re more than 18 months before your wedding because your tastes could change! The few brides here who had “dress regret” seemed to buy too early, or only shopped at 1 store then found something better.

I started by looking online. This way, you can figure out your style without wasting money driving to places. Then, make a list with the ones that you really like (maybe something visual). Looking at them together may help you narrow it down a bit. Then, figure out which one will be the most comfortable for you and provide the look that you want for your special day.

For a June wedding I think I would recommend ordering your dress 10 months prior. This allows 6 months for your dress to arrive, and then more time for alterations because that is prime prom and wedding season so there may be delays on alterations/fittings.

I went 15 months before my wedding. Its a good thing I did because my dress took 10 months to come in which is a lot longer than normal! I definitely recommend going sooner rather than later just in case it takes you a while to decide and if what happened to me happens to you and you're dress takes a lot longer than anticipated to come in (they told me 6-8 months). This way you also have time to space out alterations instead of jamming them into a few weeks before the wedding.

Alterations typically take 4-8 weeks and unless you find a dress off the rack, you could wait up to 6 + months for it to come into the store. I would say to start looking 8-10 months out. You don't want to start too early in case you lose or gain a bunch of weight. Dresses can usually only be taken in or out 2 sizes so you don't want to buy your dream dress and not be able to wear only to find out it has been discontinued and is no longer available. Once you determine your theme/style of wedding you want to have, you will get an idea of what type of dresses you want to look at. Maybe start surfing the web for styles you like.

In the meantime, have you guys set a date? Maybe start your venue search since that might take some time and some venues will even let you lock in this years rates if you book it! Have you talked about a guest list, bridal party, color scheme yet?

I got mine about 14 months in advance. I went in to look this January just to see if I could find the style I wanted and ended up walking out purchasing a dress and veil!

I would go sometime this fall if you're getting married in June just so you know you'll have enough time for the dress to come in as well as have enough time for alterations!

I went dress shopping and purchased my dress in January (8 months before my wedding). The bridal shop told me my dress should arrive in June.
