Wedding dress

Janae, on November 19, 2020 at 4:53 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20
So when I purchased my dress it was a little tight so the boutique suggested I order a size up. Even though I let them know I planned on losing weight. I was told it would be fine and could be taken in easily. I have lost about 10lbs and probably was better off keeping the size I originally tried on because it would fit good now. I'm just stressing on spending more money for alterations and wish I would have ordered the same size I tried on. Any one else have this issue? How was your alterations experience?

Havent had this issue. I have a dress and not a wedding gown so alterations should be affordable

Some brides would love to have that issue and instead have a dress that doesn’t fit because they planned to lose weight and didn’t or gained weight. While no one wants to spend more money, alterations will likely cost much less money than having to purchase a new dress altogether. It’s all about perspective. Congratulations on the weight loss. 😊

And try not to stress about the things you can’t change at this point. Put that energy in a useful, productive place. (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to remind myself to do the very same thing).

It's much easier to take a dress in than let it out. Also, the sample gown in stores get stretched out from so many people trying them on, so the size tag may not be that accurate and a brand new gown may be a lot tighter than the sample.

Just remember that the dresses in the salons have been tried on by lots of people and might be stretched out. They decide your dress size based on measurements and I’m sure you will be fine even with some weight loss.

Yes they told me I was in between sizes and to size up. Listen to your instincts! I wish I did. Some of my lace will have to be removed to take it in the way I want it to fit on my waist. I have a complicated bustle and in total alterations are around 475 dollars. I’ve seen prices on here vary greatly depending on the area and the salon.

Oh no, how much weight did you lose if you don't mind me asking? I lost 10 n plan on losing 10 more, but worry my dress will be way to big then.

My weight has fluctuated since I bought my dress. I got it pretty early (around March 2019) for my May 2020 wedding but it was postponed to January 2021. I would say I am about 10 lbs lighter now then when I first bought it. But everyone carries weight differently. I’m short and muscular so 10 lbs on me makes a pretty big difference for my waist. Height and body composition plays a factor in my opinion. A good seamstress will take it in no problem. I would be more concerned if you lost like 50 lbs or something. Good luck! I’m sure it will work out and look great! And honestly in my opinion it’s worth a few extra dollars to feel good! If I could go back in time I would not listen to them and size up though so save money.

I did not think about that. I also wore Spanx so that will make a difference as well. Hopefully next week I will be able to try it on.

So many valid points! My dress fit a too snug in the bust & waistline- I’ve lost around 15 pounds. I love my dress but absolutely hated the way it laid across my waistline (thx to my 4 kids). I recently had a tummy tuck & liposuction- absolutely can’t wait to see how it looks now! Wedding dress 1
Not planning on losing anymore because I don’t want to pay a huge amount for alterations!

I purchased my dress when I weighed 160. When I went for my first fitting I was down to 135. I didn't use David's Bridal or any alterations place. I used a women that was referred to me that used to work for a Bridal shop but started doing it out of her home. I spent 225 for alterations for them to take it in, hem it, and bustle it. She was able to take it in with absolutely no problem. It's always better to go a size up.

It is always safer to order a wedding gown too big than too small. A seamstress will easily be able to take in your gown. If you had ordered the smaller size and was unable to lose the weight, or would gain your weight back, a seamstress likely wouldn't be able to help you. I wouldn't stress about this.

I think I paid $300 for alterations? And it was BS because my dress fit almost perfectly, it just needed minor adjustments. I really wish I'd taken it to a different seamstress, because later when my now-husband needed his wedding jacket altered we found an amazing tailor for him (but my alterations were almost done).

Depending on your size, 10lbs wouldn't necessarily necessitate a size change. Also even if you ordered your correct/current dress size, most brides require alterations for a perfect fit anyway. Very few people (models included) find a dress that fits perfectly with exacting proportions off the rack. Runway models always have garments custom tailored to them before hitting the catwalk, because bodies just aren't all the same.

Plus it is ALWAYS easier to make a dress that is slightly too big fit smaller than the other way around. Having a slightly larger size will allow more fabric to get a precise fit. I, for example, have a long torso and even dresses that fit my bust-waist-hip measurements perfectly sometimes end up being too short and the waist and hips sit too high. Sizing up when buying a dress doesn't just give me width, it gives me length too. So if I wanted a dress to fit me perfectly, I'd actually size up and then have the waist and other areas brought in as needed, just to get the torso length right.

If you are going to have the dress tailored anyway and it isn't a very complex dress with a ton of precise beading and aligned patterns, I think having ordered up one size isn't a big deal and will give you the extra flexibility you need if your weight doesn't stay stable and/or you need length or extra fabric in any dimension to get a perfect fit.

The dress you try in stores is usually "broken into" I was recommended to size up, lost about 15 lbs but my dress brand spanking new ( 1 size up) fit like a glove. I literally had no alterations done. Wedding dress typically do not stretch and do not have a lot of wiggle room (my dress was a mermaid dress and had beading through out the whole body of it). Another good piece of info, I tried on my dress without the corset and puffer skirt underneath and it fit me big but once we put the corset on and everything was pushed into place and puffed out it was perfect.
