Wedding dress

Kate, on May 1, 2021 at 6:45 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
So my wedding has been postponed since August 2020, my wedding dress is hanging in the white bag it came in and has been in our bedroom closet. Not ideal to have it in a closet we frequently go into but the other closets are full of stuff or a guest closet that we’ve had family in frequently. I try to keep the light off and don’t open the bag, but I worry about yellowing or would that take several years? Also a bit concerned about moths but haven’t seen any. Any suggestions on keeping it safe from the elements/discoloration before I get the chance to wear it (which is unknown at this point)? Also, I have had the dress since Dec of 2019, they got it to me much earlier than anticipated.

I’m sure it will be fine. I too got my dress early and was worried. We got married January 2019 and I haven’t had it preserved (bad I know!) but it’s still fine. And, for the past almost year it’s lived in a closet with a window. Obviously play it safe and keep it in the closet with the door closed as much as possible, but I think you’ll be ok.

It usually takes years for gowns to yellow, so you should be fine. Just keep it in the bag, and you should be OK.

I have a used wedding dress and from personal experience... it takes a lot to have the dress yellow. My dress was used in a November 2019 wedding. I got the dress in May 2020, and my first fitting was done this past Monday. I’ve taken my dress out of the dress bag about a dozen times to try on. I even shipped it across the country so my family could see it... then stuffed it in a suitcase and flew back with it.

I have a white Oleg Cassini soft mermaid wedding dress with a long train for reference.

My dress didn’t yellow... but it did get dyed orange (pastel, splotchy) from the (poor quality, store provided) garment bag it had been kept in.
(That in and of itself is a hugely traumatic story for another time)
Yellowing because of age takes a very long time, but it’s good that you’re being mindful of other environmental factors. Aside from access to air, monitor the humidity in the house, and take the dress out for a shake to remove dust periodically. Make sure that the closet at in doesn’t have other fabrics with color (lint & high humidity & time can be killers), and don’t do anything in the room that might create dust.
Moth balls and dryer sheets are fine ideas- but moth balls can be smelly and you might have to dry clean to get it out. The odds of anyone’s dress having problems because of a covid delay or early purchasing are almost slim to none- and since I had a problem it should mean you’re going to be fine 😏🤦🏼‍♀️

I bought mine two years ago and won't wear it for a year so I asked the store what I should do with it and they said to keep it in the bag and put some cedar chips in the bottom. The chips are in a cloth draw string bag. I don't know if it's necessary but I'm still doing it!
