Wedding Dress

Sara, on July 31, 2020 at 2:27 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Ok ladies, I'm getting married on 7/17/21 and will be dress shopping next week. I have been on a weight loss journey since September of 2019 and have lost 52 lbs. My plan is to continue to lose. I workout 5-6 times a week for an hour to an hour and a half. When I find the dress should I order 1 or 2 sizes smaller?

I want to order smaller because if I have to take it in too much, it will look like a completely different dress

I definitely wouldn’t order a dress 2 size smaller with only a year to go. It also depends on how much weight you are planning on losing. If you are only planning to lose 10lbs then just get the size you are now. For most dresses, they can be taken in and let out up to 2 sizes without changing the look of the dress.

I agree about being really careful about ordering a dress smaller than your current size. As an alternative, once you find your perfect dress you can talk with your salon about how long you can reasonably wait to order it. In most cases, you will not need a full year. If you have any time at all, I'd make plans to return and have them remeasure you right before you order your dress. Yes, alterations are expensive, but it is a heck of a lot easier (and potentially less traumatic...) to take a dress in than to let it out by anything more than a "smidge." Congrats on your weight loss journey success! Smiley heart

I would go and try some stuff on but wait a little longer to order the dress. The closer to the date, the better idea you'll have of what size to order. I ordered mine in September of last year and it came in the last weekend of January. They told me to size up because I was half an inch over in one area of measurements and it's easier to take it in than it is to let it out. Most designers take 4-6 months to order and come in. My alterations have only taken 4-6 weeks. Definitely order by December but maybe hold off on ordering until then Smiley smile Keep us updated on what you choose and congrats on the weight loss! That's SUCH an accomplishment!

I started my weight loss journey in January and I am down 56lbs total. The key is to find a bridal salon willing to work with you. I went to two different places. The first one basically rolled her eyes at me when I said I was losing weight and they only put me in plus size dress that looked terrible on me. I explained to her that she could put regular dresses on me because I guaranteed her I would not need a plus size dress. The second one put me in a regular dress first thing and I fell in love with it. I explained that I was in the process of losing weight and they told me to come back in June to get remeasured and they would rush order my dress for my October wedding at no additional charge. Their dresses are made in America and made to order. I dropped 3 dress sizes. No where near a plus size anymore!

That is awesome! I hope they will be accommodating. We’ll have to see. I don’t plan on stopping my mission to be healthier either!

Keep in mind it's always easier for the seamstress to make the dress smaller during alterations than to make it bigger.

I agree with pp to maybe wait to order as you get closer. If you find a dress, ask how long it will take to come in. Also explain to them your weight loss goal, so they can give you better advice. I ordered my dress true to size in November of last year for my October 2020 wedding, and have since lost 63 pounds. I was panicking bc my consultant told me to stop at 35, otherwise it would be very difficult to alter. (But I was NOT stopping, I said to myself I’d rather be healthier). Luckily it worked out, she said no problem when I tried it on, but I do not think this is the norm lol. Just be very upfront about your goals, and let them help you with your decision. I would maybe say one size down, not two. It’s much easier to take a dress in than out. Congrats on your weight loss!!
