Wedding dress was ordered in the wrong size! HELP!

Vicki, on July 28, 2012 at 8:55 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

I ordered my wedding dress two weeks ago in a size 6 as recommended by my consultant and based on her measurements. I then found a bridal salon that has my dress in a size 6 in the store so I tried it on today. It fit me large to where I could easily take a size 4! The owner measured me and came up with size 4 measurements. I called the salon where I ordered my dress and asked if we could change the size from a 6 to a 4. I was told "No" and that the order was already under way. I cannot believe that a dress that takes 6 months to make is, after 2 weeks, already in a state where it can't be sized DOWN. I will speak with the manager when she comes in tomorrow but I also want to contact the manufacturer, Casablanca, to see if there really is no way to make a change or if it can still be done. I don't know what else to do but I am pissed. Anyone else have this problem? What did you do?

Well you would think that the consultant would be the one in trouble, I would talk to the manager for sure.

Is there a reason why the dress cannot be altered?

If they cannot stop the order and change it, they should at least offer free alterations to make it fit you perfectly. That certainly can be done. When I was a bridesmaid I had lost a lot of weight and had to go down two sizes. The dresses was altered and fit like a glove. Talk to the manager!

I do plan to do that except the measurements the consultant wrote down coincide with a size 6. They also have you initial next to the size on the order form as your "consent" to ordering that size, but that is assuming the person taking the measurements knew what they were doing. I will ask them to remeasure me. Sheeeesh this stinks.

Alterations are definitely do-able but it will be more expensive for me to take a 6 down to a 4. They won't take any responsibility for the incorrect measuring and if I wait till the dress comes in (Dec-Jan timeframe) to prove them wrong they will probably just say "oh, well you must have lost weight".

Vicki, didnt they write your weight down & height when you came in?? & also you said it was ordered 2 weeks ago.. umm I doubt you dropped 2 whole sizes even if you did lose weight in 2 weeks ...

Talk to the manager, & be super nice but basically just make sure you tell them that if the dress size can not be changed to size 4 now, then they better give you free alterations .. if not, you will call Better Business Beaureau... Also go online & put reviews EVERYWHERE about them & how they do business.... Good luck

Is your gown lace up? If so, then it shouldn't be a problem! I just ordered a Casablanca dress in a size 6 actually and got custom lace up back, and with that, it gives you a 5 inch wiggle room. Also, what size do you wear for street clothes?

Is it possible the dress you actually tried on is a little stretched out from being tried on by numerous brides?

Why didn't the consultant show you your measurements as she took them? When I got measured, the lady held out the measuring tape to show me each measurement after she was done with each section. I could feel that she was putting the tape where it was suppose to be. She would hold her finger there and hold it out so we were both making sure the right # was put down and ordered.

Also I have to agree with Nancy here...Sample dresses are a mess. You should never base your size on the sample dress! As pp states, it could be stretched out. Yes the material on the dresses is gradually stretched over time by the amount of brides trying them on, the consultant pulling the fabric to clip it in place during appointments...

My advice, get someone to take your measurements and go back to the salon and compare "notes". If the #'s are wrong, then you can say something, if they aren't then most likely the dress you tried on is bridal abused lol

    That's annoying!

I feel like there should be something they could do. Definetly speak to a manager

They told me that a sample size 6 could be stretched out to a size 8 - not sure how extra fabric can magically appear to make it that much bigger. . .I have heard that sample dresses are "broken in" but by several inches??? If that is the case then there is no problem.

Nancy I am praying that the dress I tried on is "bridal abused"!!!! This will get corrected one way or another. Thank you ladies - I can always count on you for support!!!

I would go into the store as soon as possible and have the MANAGER measure you to prove that her sales lady did it wrong and then ask the manager how she/he intends on fixing the problem or making it right because you should not have to pay hundreds out of pocket to have a dress taken in because the consultant was not able to measure you properly.

It is not uncommon for salons to insist that you order a size up citing, "It will be easier to take it in than it will be to take it out if you gain any weight." I personally feel it is a racket to boost their alterations sales. You should insist to them that they measured you improperly. Can you have the other shop write down your measurements for you? See if there is a variation between the measurements?

I think I will have to pop in to a couple other tailors and have myself measured so that I can show them they are off. The store where I bought the dress will not be doing my alterations. I had already decided that before I bought the dress so little do they know there is nothing in it for them.
