Hi all,

I went to DB last week and it was honestly a terrible experience. To preface I've never liked shopping because its always been hard to find clothes that fit me right. I'm a size 10-12 in pants, M-L in tops and a hourglass body shape. I'm also 5'0 tall so i'm very short. When i was trying on dresses they had none in my size (guessing 14) in what i liked they were either bridal size 10 or bridal size 16-18; the small sizes i couldn't get over my hips or if i did they did fit on top due to squishing my boobs. The bigger sizes i was swimming in and my boobs were in the torso area and the boob cups above them. Everything fit so badly i could picture what i'd actually end up looking like in a size that fits.

Looking back i would have asked for them to try to put my in any dress that was my size. But i just felt so defeated. I only took my SIL, i would have been so embarrassed by how awful everything looked had i brought my mom, MOH and bridal party. Is this how all bridal dresses fit? I knew i'd have to get some alterations but not redesigning a whole new dress. I live an hour away from other bridal shops and will try those but they are mainly over my budget. Any other brides dealing or dealt with this? What did you do/tips? Any dress brands to look out for?

My budget is a $1000 for the dress/alteration so not the biggest. Also I've never found petite sizing to fit either because of my hourglass shape. I am open to any shape of dress, i prefer off the shoulder, long sleeve or spaghetti strap but still open.

Thanks in advance!

UGH that’s so frustrating. I went to DB for my first round of trying on dresses. The good thing that came out of it is I did get a good idea of what didn’t look good on me LOL and then what silhouettes actually did look good or better. My problem is that I have been way too indecisive and unable to distinguish “do I like it or love it?”

All this to say, I went with ordering a custom dress from Cocomelody and love it! I paid the extra $ to get it customized to my measurements and it fits perfectly and well under $1000. They have stores in LA, NC and NYC but if you’re unable to visit the stores like me, you can order (pay for) home try on dresses that they will ship directly to you. I did that and it turned out amazingly! Good luck with everything! I never imagined dress shopping would be so stressful lol

I totally agree with this, when we got engaged Aug 2019 we were originally going to have a spring/summer 2020 wedding, but changed it to Nov 2020 because of some family issues and the heat. (in retrospect SO happy my mom threw a fit about that date because we would have had to cancel due to COVID!) Anyways so I had originally chosen a tulle spaghetti strap dress from DB for the summer because I was nervous and the lady who helped me was very pushy and scared me into thinking the dress wouldn't arrive on time. I ended up cancelling my order and decided to not go with DB. However, i couldn't find what I wanted online within my budget, so I decided to try on some more dresses at DB just for an idea of the shape and stuff, but I went to a different location and they were much better and I ended up finding my dress there!

I've gotten a couple of bridesmaid dresses there and been for my SIL's appointment and they were all great. I think maybe its just a bad time to try on dresses. They seemed to have not many sizes available. Thank you for the encouragement!

Thank you for that recommendation, i will check them out. I've never heard of them before! I am horrible at making a final decision, i end up buying stuff and thinking on it for a week before either keeping it or returning. Its no easy to return a wedding dress or get money back so i will have to be better at making decisions!

Glad your wedding wasn't cancelled! I feel so bad for all the brides that had to. Thats good to know you were able to cancel. I think that'll be the best bet. My store is in a smaller town and half of the dresses i liked they didn't even have.

I'm open to pretty much whatever! I always gravitate to long sleeve and lace but am open to anything. I didn't think i would have an actual wedding so i've never put too much thought into my dress. I think for confidence i'll probably go with an A-line that's the most flattering. Color wise i'm fine with white, ivory and a blush tone.

My wedding will be very neutral so white, champagne and black and semi formal.

I definitely am not a fan of the pushy sales tactics. I am not a shopping fan but think that i will have to plan a full day of just bridal gown shopping. Thank you for the advice!

That’s probably wise. DB did have a good return policy but I’ve read from upset bride’s in here that were unable to return dresses and accessories after they changed their return policy about a month ago.
