Wedding dress sizing

Dawn, on March 21, 2019 at 2:56 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Hi guys! So, I know this topic has been beat to death, but I can't find any "recent" forums regarding this, so I will start a new one. Here goes, and please be kind. Before trying on wedding dresses at David's Bridal, I was measured. She asked what size I normally wear, I purchase everything from Maurices it seems, so I told her a 7/8. She measured and told me I'm looking at sizing between an 8 and 10. Ok, no problem. I must have tried on 6 dresses in a size 10 that seemed to fit ok. She wanted me to try an Oleg Cassini in a 10 that another bride had (it's the a-line rose gold dress on their site), so we decided to just try a 6 to get the general idea. I was actually able to zip it up (nevermind the bit of armpit overflow and back crack, lol). Jokingly, I said "so, am I a size 6?" and we giggled a bit. Ultimately, it was ordered in an 8. There was no discussion. It's not "set" to come in until end of July, wedding is late October (although I understand that it could come in earlier). From what I have been reading, Oleg Cassini runs fairly true to size. Should I be worried or just get to slimming down a bit? Currently, I am 5'9" and 154lbs, 36B. Thanks all!

If you fit into a 6 and ordered an 8, I’m not sure why you would need to worry or slim down?

As long as you ordered based on your measurements it should be fine. Don’t pay attention to the sizing of the samples you tried on because those dresses are very stretched out.

Hi Caytlyn! Thanks for the quick response! Well, here's the scoop. I know that the store dresses that lots of people try on can be stretched out vs. the brand new dress that you purchase and order. So, maybe the 6 that I got zipped up really felt like a 4 before it got all stretched out??? I dunno. I'm overthinking this maybe. The 10's that I originally tried on were other brands I think and different designers can fit differently. However, the other designers/dresses I tried were more of the fit and flare/mermaid type dresses, so I understand needing a 10 for those ( wide hips, ugh, lol).

Kelly, my thoughts exactly on the stretched out dresses. Smiley smile I'm mostly concerned with an untouched brand new 8 fitting a bit better than a possibly stretched out 6, ya know? Thanks for the response!

I wouldn't worry, if the dress comes in and it's small (it's probably not they order based off your measurements) they will get the correct size for you. I had a Melissa Sweet dress from DB and took about 6 weeks (vs. the 4 months timeline originally had) and there was an issue and they had to re-order the dress and with rush was there in about a week! So you have plenty of time IF (and that's a big if) there is an issue Smiley smile

Thanks Tammy! Deep down I know they can order another size if it turns out it doesn't fit, but then there's the bummed out feeling of having the dress FINALLY here, only to have to wait longer for another dress. Now I'm just whining, LOL! Better to have a dress that fits than one I have to prepare my body for, right?!

My salon measured me according to the specific brands wedding dress sizing for my order (and it's like 5 sizes larger than my street size 🤦)

Wow, that's a great salon that they know the designers so well to differentiate the sizing. David's Bridal carried a few different designers and I guess I thought a wedding dress was a wedding dress in terms of size. On the plus side, I looked up real brides selling their Oleg Cassini dresses and their street size seemed 75% true to their dress size. I think I will be ok. Oh well, can't do much now besides wait and lay off the brownies. Smiley smile

I'd absolutely go by measurements and then order according to the manufacturer's size chart. Daughter tried on a size 8 Rebecca Ingram dress that they had to clip in at least 4" in the back. Her measurements were for a size 8. We went with that and it was a perfect fit when her dress came in. It's hard to imagine how stretched out sample dresses are, but based on our experiences, do NOT order based on sample size!

Wedding dress sizing is bizarre to begin with. I wouldn't worry about it.

I can relate to your stress. I normally wear an 8 or 10. I tried on my dress and it was a 12 and fit slightly loose but comfortable. Mostly lose from belly button up. They said I could go a 12 or 14. When I heard thatI 2as noticeably sad. I never wore a 12 or 14 dress. The girl reassured wedding dresses run small. She recommended a 14 because the sample was probably stretched out. I stubbornly ordered a 12 and signed a waiver. I go on March 30th to pick it up for first time and sweating bullets it won't fit. It won't be anybody's fault but my own. It sounds like you ordered corectly and best wishes on an amazing fit.
