Wedding dress shopping when parents are deceased

Danielle, on June 11, 2020 at 7:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
Im an older first time bride 46. My mom passed when i was 10 my dad at 30. Dress shopping is the one thing im dreading without my either one of them especially my dad. My dad would have loved every moment of dress shopping lol. Im only taking my matron of honor since i know she can handle this with me. Anyone have survived the dress shopping experience abd any advice so i don't have a mental meltdown.

Always remember that it's what YOU feel good in. everyone has different fashion tastes, so people might sway you but always remember that it's your decision so don't get a dress just because someone else likes it.

and also, be open minded about trying different styles - you never know what you might like

They WILL be with you. Just know that you’re doing everything they could have wanted you to do and they are going to watch you shine from the best seats in the house. I’m going through some thing a little bit similar. This might sound a little cheesy and childish but I always think of Elsa from Frozen because I LOVE Elsa. I think of how strong and brave Elsa was and taking any challenge headfirst. I assume that your matron of honor is someone you hold close to your heart and will be the supportive person you deserve to have there. You’re starting a new chapter in your life and that is being the wife to your best friend! Think about the family that you both will start whether it’s with children, or pets, or adoption, or just the two of you And focus on the positive memories that you have of your parents as well. I’m sure you’ll do great and I’m sure you’re going to find the dress of your dreams! Good luck♥️

I understand how you feel i lost my dad in 2005 I was 16 now 32...my mom thank god she's still on earth. However she was unable to come with me dress shopping due to her living in a diff county in NYS. I brought my bridal party and MOH. bring the person who will support you 100percent.

::hugs:: clearly you had a good relationship with your parents, so I would encourage you to remember they are both a part of you and the way you think, they are with you in heart through all of this. Listen to your gut when you're looking for a dress, it may just be one of them weighing in 🙂

My mother passed when I was 4 and my dad is distant from all of his kids unless he needs something, so I do, to some degree, know how you feel.

It's all a matter of perception! Depending what you believe in, you can imagine that they are present, watching down on you and that they are there witnessing you fall in love with your dress.

I know it's hard, I lost my brother and my sister in a very short period of time and I wish they could be physically present, especially at this time.

First time I shopped with my sister as my mom was not able to travel. (She died the next year). You can make it the best by being with someone you love and trust. I actually shopped this time by myself, my moh and a friend. It’s not necessarily all rainbows and butterflies. But try on different ones. My niece loved the big dresses with appliqués which I tried on and decided not for me. But it’s all part of figuring out which you like (bling for me) and not (no lace).

It'll be okay! I'm glad you have someone who can be there!

My dress shopping was not at all how I pictured it'd be. I was alone per the store requirement with a mask on, with nearly all the lights off (the store was "closed" with COVID) and hardly a soul there. I had to try on dresses by myself in a dark fitting room without the attendant, and then went out and stood in front of the big mirror and the attendant forgot about me for a good 5 mins. She seemed inconvenienced when I asked to try on a veil, saying that it'd have to be disinfected.

Definitely came close to shedding some tears because the whole thing felt a little heartbreaking, tbh.

Your experience will be better, I'm sure of it. Even if it isn't what you had hoped Smiley heart
