Wedding dress samples without price tags?

Valerie, on November 13, 2019 at 3:22 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
I tried on a dress sample and I realized it didn’t have a price tag. I remember asking the woman helping me how much and I vaguely remember the exact price but I could have sworn she said $1400. I call back asking for more details price wise bc I’m very interested in purchasing this gown but the girl over phone tells me the msrp price is $1499 and they can offer me a discount of 15% on the dress. My question is should I bring up that I heard $1400 (even though I’m not 100% sure) at the appointment? I was asking about discounts in person and they wouldn’t quote me anything concrete. During my phone convo with them, the girl asked about my budget again and I stupidly said I realize this will be over my budget but I really want the dress so I’m afraid I said too much and I could have gotten a better discount but now they think I’m desperate and will pay anything. Original budget $1000. Thoughts?

When I went dress shopping they asked for my budget upfront and didn't show me any dresses that were over my budget. All of the dresses I tried on also had tags.

I think it is really unprofessional that they would sell you on a dress you love but it was way out of your budget. Also not having tags on a dress seems like a red flag.

Do you know the designer and style number of the dress you like? If you can find the designer's website they usually have it where you can look up a style and find shops near you that carry that same dress. Other places might have it for cheaper or you can look for it online used or private seller.

Unfortunately I am one of those cases where they got me hooked on a dress out of my budget and now I want to buy it but I’m afraid of being ripped off. The designer tag was on the dress but no price tag was on it. Also, when I asked for style number to be able to find it online they said they don’t give that out (store policy). I found the dress online anyway due to my great detective skills but how do I find out the actual msrp of the dress?

Most designers don't list MSRP since the prices change from store to store, it depends on the relationship the store has with the designer. I would call around to other stores and see if they carry the dress. You could also look for it online from stillwhite.com or other "used" dress websites. (They are not always used, some still have tags)

They will probably deny it even if the salesperson said it. You could bring it up to try and get a 20% discount, as that's roughly the same discount as 15% of $1400. I would do as PP suggested and call some other shops to see if they offer it and what the price is. Just be aware though, they may not give you a price over the phone, and most places from what I have seen will make you schedule a full appointment even if you know the specific dress you want to try on.
