Wedding Dress Regret

Jessica, on October 24, 2019 at 12:02 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18
So I bought a dress and I try it on at least once a week and pull on it in certain areas to try to get it to look the way I want. I even went back to the store and had them pin it up to help me visualize how it can be altered. I like the dress, just not sure it is the most flattering for my figure. I have a curvy figure and it just doesn't hug my waist into my curves. My options:

1) Go back to alterations and see if they can pin it to create a more hourglass look.

2) Get a belt to create the illusion of a waistline.

3) Look for another dress 😳🙄😩 Wedding is Feb 9, 2020.

Has anyone else had similar experience? What did you do? Its just so hard to visualize these dresses on me when they don't really fit right until after their altered.

I would go to alterations and have them pin it. I went to two places to get alterations estimates and the first just showed me where they would take it in, but the second place actually pinned up the entire dress like I was a pin cushion and I LOVED it bc it gave me a visual of what it'll actually look like.

Talk with them and let them know what you want so they can show you what they can do before trying to find another dress. A professional will make it flattering to your figure and help you be comfortable. It's not too late to get a new dress off the rack if you REALLY wanted to. Good luck!
Do you have a pic of you in the dress? Sometimes it helps for others to offer their suggestions.

Hi Jessica! I'm so sorry that you are feeling this way about your dress.

It might help you to remember the things about your dress that you absolutely love. What about it made you choose it as the dress you wanted to get married in. Plenty of women start to have second thoughts about their dress, but you should definitely focus on how beautiful I'm sure you look in it and what features you love about it.

If one of the issues is that you feel it doesn't hug your body shape the way you want, I would definitely consult a seamstress as this is something that you can alter to get your desired look. You should at least consult a seamstress so you know whatis possible to do and then you can make an informed decision about your next steps.

Put a belt on it. I have a mermaid dress and I'm short with barely a waist but when I put a belt on...it gives a very nice illusion.

From the back, my figure is popping, the front it just looks straight. haha. I don't know how best to describe. I added a picture of the model with the belt on.

They pinned it at Davids Bridal, but also thought about going to someone else. The good thing is I can exchange the dress as long as it will come in time. Thanks for the feedback.

So pretty! I think alterations will make a big difference. It also wouldn't hurt to add a belt. Plus, extra bling is generally a good thing right?! Smiley smile

You look beautiful! I can see the definition in your waist in the picture of the back. I think it is a very very flattering silhouette!!! Alterations will literally make it fit to your body to a T! I think they’ll even take the sleeves in to fit your arms etc! I’d say keep the dress! (By the way, I’m eyeing this same dress, going to try it on in a few weeks!!)

Yasss, that's great. I really love this dress. I think I'm going to find a local seamstress outside of David's Bridal and have them help me visualize the front. I'm thinking to maybe do a belt that is sewn onto the dress versus a tied version to not take away from the back.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts after you try it on. FYI there is about 0% stretch on the material under the dress. Lol. But I won't have any need to sit down really. 🤪😳😂

Beautiful dress. I think alterations will make a huge difference in how you feel. It’s clearly loose around your rib cage.

You look great in your dress!! I agree with others that alterations will make all the difference and I love the idea of a belt. The back is stunning and once they take in the dress under your chest it'll look amazing. Plus, look at your face.. you look SOOO happy. That's great about David bridals return policy and you should really do what will ultimately make you happy, but remember why you fell in love with it in the first place Smiley smile

Thank you!! You and everyone else are very kind. I think I'm going to talk to another seamstress and see what they think. DB was not convincing me with how they pinned it up.

Yes! I think that's a great idea and if after that you still aren't comfortable in your dress, then I think you have your answer.

I had dress regret at one point, but once it was pinned correctly it changed everything!

So I made 3 appointments with different tailors that have received close to 5 star reviews. The first appointment I have is my top pick based on reviews, so hopefully I won't need to go to any of the others. I also was in touch with a girl who had my same dress and she's curvy like me. Showed me pictures of her dress and she looked so lovely. I feel confident that I can get what I want out if this dress. Thanks for talking some sense into me ladies. I've decided I won't try my dress on until my first alterations appt so I don't lose it again. 😳😆😂

Is that a sheath? It does seem a bit loose in the front. In my experience, if the torso of the dress does not have any structure or boning, the dress alone will not suck in at the waist. Your dress has a sheer lace back so the fabric will just hang the way it hangs, it won't hug your body or force your waist in as much (like a corset would). I presume you've already tried dresses that flare out at the hips, inherently creating more of a waist.

If you're going to purchase it, I would take it to an outside tailor who only does wedding alterations (no dress sales). See how you like it pinned up and with a belt. If you still don't like it, you can exchange it for a different silhouette (A-line, fit and flare) with a dress that has a more "firm" waist that's meant to hug your torso.

I think the problem with using in house tailors is that they don't have to provide great quality work to get repeat business. Another option is go to a different DB and maybe they'll have a better pinner upper.

    You'll look great either way!

I took it to a wonderful lady yesterday. I wish I would've taken pictures, but she's going to work her magic. She created a wonderful silhouette and is going to add boning in certain places to add structure, give me a boob job 😆 and several other things.

You are spot on with your assessment of the dress. I initially had to try on a size 16 at the store and it swallowed me. I think if I would've tried on my actual size, I may not have gotten the dress. I basically decided based off the website photo and looking at the material in person. 😟

Like you mentioned the back lace shes adding boning for structure and is taking it in so it lays nicely. So more to come. I hope to post pictures along the way in this thread to show the final outcome. Hopefully it will help others with dress regret in the future.

Went to my second fitting this past weekend. Loving the way the dress is fitting. Its hugging my curves. Now I just need to slim down a tad. It was a little snug. Nothing major. I'm excited!!!
