Wedding Dress one size too small

I am having a hard time. My dress came in about a month ago and it is really tight in the bust and hip/waist area. I could tell on the dress consultant's face that she was a little concerned. Mind you, I ordered my dress in a 6...but when she noticed it was a little tight she said, "Well I see here...

I am having a hard time. My dress came in about a month ago and it is really tight in the bust and hip/waist area. I could tell on the dress consultant's face that she was a little concerned. Mind you, I ordered my dress in a 6...but when she noticed it was a little tight she said, "Well I see here that we recommended you a size 8." She also said that my measurements are "close" to what she wrote down when I first ordered the dress. I understood that but I am only 5' and weigh 130. I know dress sizes range depending on the designer. I know now I should have swallowed my pride and ordered an 8.

Are there any suggestions on how I should deal with this self esteem blow that I am feeling? I know that it's only December and I am getting married early May so I have time to lose weight. I understand I can also get alterations which I will have to end up doing. Let the stress begin!!

Thanks in advance.

Don't let the number freak you out. I'm a 0-6 in normal clothes but my wedding dress is a size 10. And I was in the same predicament (in between sizes) and I chose the larger size for this exact reason. See if they can exchange for the bigger size. My salon told me I had like two weeks from the time the dress came in to exchange for a different size. If they can't get the correct size for you, then hopefully letting the dress out one size won't be too difficult for your seamstress.

If your wedding is in May, I would try to get to a seamstress before February if you can. This will give you some extra wiggle room in case they have to do more work or if you have to order extra fabric or worst case scenario, a new dress.

When they measured me, they told me I was one size in the hips, another, smaller size in the waist, and a third, much larger size in the bust. The recommended ordering the largest, as it will always be easier to edit down than to edit up. However, since you are between sizes and it's only a bit tight, I don't think you'll have any trouble with alterations making things fit you.

I am having a corset back put into my dress. The dress I found was probably originally a 700 dress, I found it on Craigslist and paid only $70 for it, but it is too small to zip up all the way. I love the dress, and this way I can have laces the same color as the tie and vest the groom will be wearing. The corset back will allow for weight gain/loss.

My dress is a 12 and I normally wear an 8 or 10. I didn't really care about the number. If you can't exchange the dress for a bigger size, you need to try your best to loose the weight or pay to have it let out if possible.

I normally wear 10-12 depending. My dress is 14. I'm just as short as you OP (4'11") and was inbetween sizes as well. I fit in a 12 everywhere else but in the chest area, thats what bumped it up to 14. Don't let a number affect how you feel in your own skin. We are all beautiful.

Wedding dresses are always a size up- I'm a 6 and 8s fit me like a glove. She should have told you that. All wedding dresses are sized larger than regular sizes

Don't worry about it- You don't need to do alterations for a few months anyway!

You have time to lose weight if you desire.

I felt like shit ordering a size 10 at 120lbs, but it is what it is.

Eek! I've yet to shop for dresses (yes I know! Very behind) and I'm even more nervous now! I wear a street size 10-12 so I'm apprehensive to go shopping! But the comments on this thread taught me a lot!

@Jessica you need to get a dress like this weekend! Otherwise you may have to buy off the rack.

Bridal sizing is weird! Don't feel down about it! I'm normally a size 4. I ordered an 8 in my dress and its snug on my hips.

If they recommended one size and you picked another, I don't think they are obligated to get a different dress for you.

Go to a good seamstress and see what they can do for you.

I just picked mine up today. Everyday dress size I'm an 8. My wedding dress is a 14. THats just how wedding dresses are. There's no pride blow or self esteem blow to worry about. Bridal sizes are totally different than everyday sizes. I had to order a 14 just because of my hips/butt. My waist/bust was a 10 and 12. That's still larger than everyday wear for me. Don't be hard on yourself about the number on the dress.

@Jessica you dont necessarily have to stress. I bought my dress online from DB. It arrived in a week and fit like a glove. I still need to get a bustle but no other alterations are needed. Depends on what you are looking for. If you want a fancy designer it is more likely that it will take longer.

Don't let the number bum you out. Like previous posters have said dress sizes for the bridal gowns are sized differently than normal clothes. I normally wear a size 4 in dresses, but my wedding dress is a size 8 and fits me perfectly .

I'm same measurements as you and ordered an 8 per consultant recommendation. When it came in the dress was sooo small, about 4 inches from closing. I didn't gain any weight in the 3 months I was waiting for the dress so it was consultants fault and they ordered me a 10. It fits great except bust is a little tight due to a corset type lining. I'm having alterations in February. These dress sizes are crazy! My wedding is April. Good luck!
