Wedding Dress - hips don't lie

I went to a smaller boutique to check out some dresses. They had a designer I liked and figured to give it a shot. I had been to an Alfred Angelo store as my first experience and they had many more sizes to try on, but this other bridal boutique only carried about 2 sizes which I understand but their biggest ones was a size 12. Out of the dozen dresses I tried out, only 2 actually zipped ! It was the first time having 2 friends there I felt extremely mortified. I'm not talking it felt tight, more like "girl get off that dress". I've always been proud of my Latina hips but gosh did I feel terrible today. I also didn't help that they only had one size of each dress. So I couldn't even ask for a slightly bigger size to accommodate. I should've done my research better when looking up bridal stores.

You live and you learn. Any Advice and tips highly appreciated but mostly needed to vent.

Eeeesh, I think saying that women with hips should stick to a-lines or ballgowns is a bit outdated, and this is coming from a woman who bought and adores her ballgown dress. A properly fitted mermaid, trumpet, or sheath is going to look kickass on a woman with curves. Actually, when a dress is properly fitted it can suit many body types, there is no one right way to look or dress.

Honestly? That's how the industry works. It's not the salon owners' fault that you have body image issues - if you want to keep dress shopping, you'll have to get over it. Wedding dress shopping isn't like shopping for other clothes.

Because wedding dress designers typically only send samples in bridal 10 and 20 (which is like street size 8 and 16), this is most brides' shopping experience. It's no reflection on you, the salon, or anyone else there. It's just the way the industry works. My first dress shopping experience was at Kleinfeld's in NYC - the Say Yes to the Dress place - and even they didn't have larger samples for me! I had to shimmy my size 14 hips into size 10s and have the backs clipped in place. It worked, I got a gorgeous dress, and had no embarrassment.

Unfortunately with the smaller boutiques they tend to only have a few sample sizes. I'm sorry they made you feel that way. Totally embrace that booty!

ETA: don't stick to an A-Line or Ballgown, that is horrible advice. I bet you'd look amazing in a mermaid. I do think that the larger stores will have a bigger variety of dress sizes to try on.

@Emilyg a little harsh? "its not the owners fault that you have body image issues" - she doesn't have body image issues, as she says she likes her latina hips. Also, the sample sizes are usually 10-14.

Wow people... is it WTF Wednesday?!
