Wedding Dress Help!

Elizabeth, on July 12, 2020 at 4:51 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

HELP! I have lots of wedding dress questions if anyone can help! So, I originally wanted an A-line dress, but I fell in love with the train and certain elements of this ball gown. The style is Allure 9732, which is considered an A-line and a ball gown. I am 6'0 tall and I knew I would need extra length for my dress, but the bridal consultant insisted I didn't need it, so extra length wasn't ordered. My dress came in a few weeks ago and it's about 3-4 inches too short. My bridal store figured out that their sample was extra length and then said they would give me their sample dress since it's the right length (almost, still a little short). They also offered to add more lace to the hemline of my dress that was ordered. I already don't love the skirt of my dress, I don't like the lace at the bottom, so I really don't want to add more lace to the dress. But, I think getting a sample dress when I paid for a brand new dress is not fair, but the sample is the only option at this point. Should I request a partial refund if I take the sample dress? Should I make them give me another dress off the rack? My wedding is October 2nd, so there's no time to order a new dress.

And now for part 2, so there are elements I want to change about my dress since I would hopefully have enough money for more custom alterations if I get a partial refund for taking the sample dress, but I wanted to know if this was even possible. So, like I mentioned earlier I wanted an A-line, so I took the crinoline out of my dress (picture shows without crinoline), but it's still not falling very nicely and I really just want a new skirt. I want to keep the lace the goes from the bodice down to the skirt, but get rid of the lace around the bottom of the dress, but keep the train. I also want the skirt to be more flowy. Would redesigning my skirt even be a possibility? Make the skirt without the bottom lace, more flowy, and less poofy? Allure styles that I love the flow of the skirts are: https://www.allurebridals.com/style/3368 and https://www.allurebridals.com/style/3310 and is what I would love.

Thank you so much for any help you can give me!! This has been such a mess and has taken away so much joy from my wedding.

I don’t have anything to add about the custom alterations but I would most definitely think you would get a refund for a sample dress!

You should absolutely request a partial refund for ending up with a sample dress over their mistake!

I would definitely ask for a partial refund. But I also feel like there’s so much you want to change with dress that I’m questioning if you really feel like you chose the right one. Definitely talk to the shop about all your options. Only they can really say what alterations are possible.

Exchange for a sample you actually love and don't want to redesign. Have them refund the difference. I don't think it's worth the trouble or money when there's so much you already don't like about such a large portion of the dress

If you are unhappy with the skirt, I think you refuse the sample (they get way more torn up than even a once worn dress because of all the in and out, zipping and unzipping, and clipping) and aim for getting a full refund - maybe store credit if you think you’d want to continue working with them.

Redesigning the skirt is possible but based on some similar lofty alteration requests I had it will cost you a pretty penny. If you do keep the dress, I’d take it to an outside tailor and not their in house which may try to make money back on you (assuming they have you a partial refund for the sample).
Sometimes it’s also worth it to cut losses, sell the dress as unworn at a slight discount (then wait patiently for it to sell) and start the dress hunt over again.
