Wedding dress emergency!

Maria De La Luz, on March 19, 2020 at 4:16 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 10
Hey guys. So i signed a contract for my wedding dress that says no refund or exchanges “no exceptions” and I’m just wondering if the crisis going on today is an exception? Everyone I ask tells me that by law I should be able to get my money/an exchange. Which I think is true considering COVID-19 does trigger force majeure rights under US law.. also, all the other vendors were understanding of the postponing.

I was suppose to get married April 18 this year. We are now postponing Smiley sad I don’t exactly love my dress and felt pressured into buying something considering my date was around the corner. Since I had planned to get married in early spring I got a sleeveless dress but now it’s possible I’ll get married sometime in November. I don’t feel too excited about my dress. Just asking you guys what you guys think I should do!! And if you guys know if this situation is an exception!! Thank you Smiley smile!!!

I don’t think that the pandemic entitles you to a refund on a product that you’ve already received.

Depends on your contract & what they vendor says. Some are more understanding than others. Contact them, explain and see what they say! Good luck!!

I totally agree. If the shop were closed and they were unable to deliver your dress then, sure, that’s force majeure. But I have never heard of a scenario where someone has gotten a refund for fully rendered services that were not fundamentally flawed in some way.

I highly doubt they will want to give you a refund if you already received the dress, especially if you got it under a no refund/exchange policy. Have you thought about maybe having that dress altered to look more like what you might have envisioned?

4 out of 7 of my vendors did not care about the pandemic and held strong to their contract. It has been hit or miss and even though as consumers we have rights, vendors will most likely say that they can work with you despite the happenings in the world. In other words, "they can still provide photography services even though your venue may close, restaurants may close and your bartender may get laid off."

That has been my experience. Not Good.

Maybe you can just get a credit towards another dress 😁

    Is "everyone" a lawyer?

You've already purchased and received your dress. There's no reason for a refund just because of the virus.

I can't imagine why this situation would be an exception for a wedding dress. Caterers? Venues? Yes, those are time dependent and current events dictate that you can't use them right this minute. A wedding dress is not perishable. It can still be used no matter when you have your wedding. There's no reason for them to not honor the contract.

Hey! Yes the shop was closed in March (due to this virus) which is when the adjustments to my dress were suppose to be finalized so I can have my dress by April, the month I was suppose to get married. The dress is still in the shop and i haven’t received any call from them. What is your advice on what I should do?? Smiley sad

In that case, I think you should contact an attorney. They are still considered essential services in most states and should still be working.
