Wedding Dress Change

Melissa, on August 26, 2021 at 8:49 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8
I wanted to share my experience with brides to be. I feel like the entire wedding process is so completely unpredictable that an open mind and flexibility is the only way any of us will get through it. My story is: I had my eye on a dress (davidsbridal) and went in early March with my MOH and mother to try on. We loved it! After looking at photos I knew the dress was for me but, was little off about the scoop-low back. I spoke with alterations about building the back and adding buttons and was assured it could be done so I went on my merry way. That was four months ago. Yesterday, I go for my first fitting and the seamstress straight out told me she absolutely could not, would not do that for me. She was actually really rude and insensitive about the whole thing. So, I decided to try on a number of other dresses and she continued to tell me how she could not, would not alter any of the dresses besides the basics. So, I left. At this point it was clear the alteration was extensive and expensive so I should at least try other options. There's this idea of the perfect dress but, idk if there is a perfect dress, just a dress you love, but there can be different versions of that and you can love other dresses too. I went to another shop (davidsbridal) where I knew the stock would be different and worked with a wonderful salesgirl who helped me find a similar style to my original dress along with the back of my dreams. It was a WOW moment. Most importantly I was able to exchange my original purchase ( outside of their policy) and not lose any money ( lucky). As you can imagine this was a completely unforeseen, 5 hour ordeal. Since my wedding is in November and the dress had to be ordered at the first store so I could recieve my full exchange theres a bit of a time crunch. All saleswomen at both stores were helpful and willing to work with me. I will be getting my alterations at the second store after I pick up my dress. Maybe beware of shopping at davidsbridal especially if your dress needs alot of alterations. In the end, I had to make the right choice for me and while neither my mother nor my MOH were with me this time around I had to ultimately make the decision on my own, which is what is so important to remember when wedding planning because people will make you believe their input is necessary for your choice to be made.

Oh wow, I had my first fitting with them August 1 and had absolutely no problems. I guess it depends which location you visit. I didn't have any problems with dress shopping or alterations. I pick up my dress next Friday and I am super excited. Hopefully it comes out exactly how I want it!

Back to you though, at least you were able to return the dress because I know they have a strict policy since covid. Did they give you an estimated time of when your dress would be ready for pickup?

I also had a great experience trying on dresses with them the first time but, yes, I agree definitely depends on location. Honestly, I think it was just this particular seamstress. The saleswomen made sure to push up my wedding date and make all kinds of changes so that it will arrive on or before Sept. 21st and my alterations appointment is set the 29th. This dress also needs minimal alterations vs the original so in the end I may have been steered in the right direction yet, so disheartening to have to deal with such an unpleasant person during such a sensitive experience.

I think often, the consultants selling you the dress aren't alterations people, and work on commission, so they promise a lot of things without having any real idea whether the seamstresses can back up what they're saying at all.

It sounds like the alterations person was particularly bad, and in conjunction with the salesperson telling you something very different, it was a perfect storm to create a horrible situation for you.

I'm relieved to hear you were able to find something that really matched your vision and that you love without too many alterations!

I knew going in with my own dress that there were some features I didn't love/want initially, but I also knew that I shouldn't buy it unless I felt ok with not being able to make any of the more substantial alterations I was thinking of, since you never know - only a seamstress will know how a dress is constructed, and whether what you're asking for is even possible without basically taking the dress to bits, which might end up costing more than it's worth to do.

My alterations lady is an absolute gem and has added the features I wanted (which it now turns out were probably not a great idea due to having to postpone to a totally new season!) but honestly, being able to trust her and know she is decent was so important.

It doesn't sound like the original person you spoke to can be particularly good at her job, if she can't/won't do more than the most basic of alterations to a dress.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I think that ultimately when I had started to envision this full back piece, which my original dress did not have, that should've been the that hint that I needed to keep looking. I'm so happy to hear that most alterations work out well and other seamstresses are very pleasant. I look forward to working with someone else moving forward.

I definitely think it all depends on which location you go to. I originally bought a mermaid style dress before covid. Realized it wasn't the dress for me after seeing pictures my mom took of me in it. During covid once they opened back up was able to get my money back. Got a ball gown with tons of layers. And the seamstress was so polite and worked with me and my mom. Even took the time to explain everything being done to my dress. Giving me pointers on how to walk in the dress, how to hold the dress. And suggestes to my mom to take a video of how she bustled up my dress. And went over the bustle process a couple of times with her to make sure she understood how to do it. I was very pleased with my trip to David's bridal. But like I said it depends on the workers working at the store.

This is exactly what happened to me! After buying my dress months ago certain about it I saw pictures that were taken during the try-on and started second guessing it. Most likely I should've decided to return it and begin the process again once I realized I did not want a full open back. But I didn't. Thank you! I feel so much better knowing others have had great experiences with alterations at DB.
