Wedding dress can’t be bustled

Christina, on June 28, 2022 at 6:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
I went to my first fitting today, and the seamstress said my dress can’t be bustled because of the delicate material. Instead, she’d have to put in a loop in order for me to hold up the dress. Has anyone else had to do that? Wedding dress can’t be bustled 1

What type of loop? I’ve never heard of a bustle not being able to get done, maybe more time to do it but not an impossible task. Is it just lace?

I’ve heard of this as my Seamstress was working on this for another bride. It seems like a lot to hold it up the whole time.

Yes this almost happened to me. While my dress was very pretty on the bottom lace with an inner layer that added sparkle, the seamstress was worried that bustling it would weight down the dress and tear it. Instead she was able to put in 4 hooks instead of 1.

Yes sometimes they ll sew a loop into your dress that you wear on your wrist or hold in your hand like shown below. The downsides to this are it can get heavy and the loop can break . Your dress is so pretty, what is the material of the skirt. There are several different types of bustles hopefully you ll find one that works well for your dress and your needs. Good luck!

Bustle Types (there are probably more but here are some popular ones)

The Royal Bustle This type of bustle can be simple or elaborate depending on the desired look. If the bride wants a singular pickup point, it only requires one hook and eyelet to lift the train. But for more detail, multiple pickup points can be added down and across the back.

French Bustle Also known as the under-bustle, this technique is the opposite of the American style as it has the train fold under itself instead of over. The end look is an understated, two layer hem that creates design in the back. With this type of bustle, the seamstress adds color-coordinated ribbons or numbers underneath the gown. Then when it's time to be bustled, the train tucks up and under as each hook is easily matched with its pair, creating a streamline fold.

Bow Bustle This type of wedding dress bustle is easy to envision and is perfect for gowns that have a statement bow or sash in the back. With a bow bustle, the fabric is folded above the gown and is secured with ties hidden under the bow. This allows the fabric to pick up and symmetrically flow from the elegant visual point of the bow.

Ballroom bustle Don't let the name fool you, this style bustle isn't exclusive to sweeping gowns. Instead the ballroom style is one of the most flattering wedding dress bustle types because it completely hides the train without changing the look of the dress. In order to create this seamless illusion, several points are added under the dress for the train to attach to. This results in the look of an untouched, floor-length gown.

Austrian Bustle The Austrian bustle is the least common style but it is steadily gaining popularity. The bride uses a drawstring to pull up the train to create a ruffled look.

American A popular way to pick up the train is with the American bustle. Also known as an over-bustle, this look is made when the outside of the train is lifted and secured over the back of the gown to the wedding dress's waistline. It's a simple bustle for the seamstress to create and easy to attach on wedding day. This bustle adds drama to the back by creating a cascading feel as the fabric folds flow over the rest of the skirt. Brides also have some flexibility with this bustle to decide if they want one statement pickup or to add multiple pickup points for extra flair depending on what they think complements the style of their gown best.

There are ways to safely bustle tulle. It usually just requires adding additional hooks/bustle points

I had a bustle on mine but decided at the last minute to let it drag behind me all night… I just loved my dress so much I figured “why not”.
Your dress can be bustled in many ways, but an experienced seamstress that knows the fabric and weight of the train would suggest whatever is appropriate. If she bustles it and it tears you might be very upset, so the arm loop might be best.
I’m all for doing the dramatic “carry the train” or letting it drag I mean how often do we get to wear these dresses lol

A train doesn't make it a wedding dress, you make it a wedding dress. I would consider cutting it the same length around if there was no intricate design on the lower hem. But, ask yourself how you envisioned your dress because a bustle may actually be contrary to your vision.

The top layer of my dress was lace so to have a bustle I couldn't use hooks or anything like it that could potentially damage the lace, so what my seamstress did was she attached tying ribbon underneath, on the bottom layer closest to my skin, in order to have a bustle. It had to be tied, which took a little longer, but still looked beautiful to me.

Your dress looks VERY similar to mine, and I had a bustle. I had 5 points, right at the waistline. I could see the buttons when the dress was down, if that’s a concern, but it’s something really only I would ever notice, so it didn’t bother me at all.

I'd echo the above posters that your dress may be able to be bustled if it has multiple points. Try talking to another seamstress for a second opinion. If the one you spoke to doesn't think the dress can be bustled, it might be that they aren't sure they have the skill/ ability to do it, in which case you probably won't want them attempting it.
