I hope my dress can be French bustled. I just think it looks cleaner and not like an afterthought. A lot of American bustles are done poorly and look sloppy.

My daughter did a 3 point American bustle. With the layers in her skirt it blended in and didn’t look like a bustle at all. The type of bustle you use really depends on your dress and personal taste.

A French (under) bustle looks more like it's part of the design of the dress, while an American (over) bustle looks like the train was just pinned up (which...it was). But to me, a French bustle can look like a saggy butt, so I went with an American bustle. I also close this style because the fabric lays flatter than a French and I wanted to show more of the lace design on my train.

Daughter's a-line ballgown dress had both. The outer layers of tulle and lace had a 3-point over bustle (the center point was at the waist of her dress), and the satin lining layers had a 3-point under bustle. Together, they did a nice job of making the back of her dress even with the front, so once bustled, it just looked like a full ballgown without a train. (Daughter was NOT a fan of low over-bustles that in her words "look like the bride is pooping tulle....")

I originally thought I would do an american bustle so the lace on the train is accented, though, this post has me curious to see how a French bustle would look!

Yes there r a few different ones. I YouTube/googled a few to get am idea. Right now I am thinking the American but I am not sure just yet. Must definitely which ever one make the dress look better of course 😀😀 I don't want to be pooping tulle lol I felt the same why when I seen that one. However on some dresses it looked gorgeous, I think that why I am so confused.

I decided to go with the American bustle. The seamstress simulated what a French would look like on my dress and it looked saggy and frumpy. I also wanted to showcase the beautiful lace on my train. If I had done a French, most of the lace would've been hidden under the dress. I personally never like the look of a French, they always look saggy and just weird to me... 🤷‍♀️ Maybe it depends on the dress though.

I did an american bustle. My seamstress pinned it both ways but the american bustle was more flattering in my opinion! My bustle did break though, so I wish there would have been a few more points to help distribute the weight.

The skirt on my wedding dress was taffeta. So would look best for my dress was to have an under bustle. it had 14 points that had to be tied but it made the dress looks seamless. I think it really all depends on the type of fabric you have because you don't want a big bulge on your butt.

I went with an American bustle. I think the style of your dress really depends on which bustle looks best. Ball gowns tend to be the only gowns that can slightly pull off a French bustle, however, I think French bustles are unattractive.

Well it’s too late for me. My alterations lady didn’t ask what kind I wanted... Also my dress shop didn’t tell me there were different kinds when they told me to ask my alterations lady for a bustle .
