Wedding Dress Boob issue

Caitlin, on April 11, 2021 at 1:46 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
Hi all! My wedding is October 9, 2021, my Mom recently passed away from a long battle with cancer, before she passed we were able to pick out my dress together. As you can imagine this dress is VERY important to me. The dress has not come in yet and I have not have any fittings or alterations yet. I have always always wanted a breast enlargement and my Mom always supported me in this. The plan to get them done has been put off numerous times for various reasons including taking care of my sick Mom. I am finally in a place in life to be able to get a Brest augmentation but I am TERRIFIED doing so will cause problems with me dress. Has anyone experienced this or have any advise? I want to look and feel my best on this special day but not at the expense of not being able to wear the dress my Mom and I picked together. Thank you!

Do you have a picture of the dress? It'll be a little easier to give feedback if we know what the dress looks like. Also, what size are you thinking of going to? That's going to make a big difference as well. I am a 34G, and my dress supported me just fine, but I specifically needed a dress that either had a built in corset to keep the girls in place or be able to wear a bra. I wouldn't have been able to do a dress with a low back because of the support I need.

Also, since your wedding is in October, I would maybe talk to a surgeon about the healing time post-op. Certain surgeries take awhile to fully heal, and you may not have the exact look you want for the wedding depending on the timeline.

There is a lot more information needed here.

How much larger are you going? Have you had a consult yet?

What kind of closure is the dress? Corset/lace up will have more flexibility than a zipper or button. You can always add a wider modesty panel if it's a corset to give you more room.

Ask the salon about the seam allowance. There will be a small seam allowance, though how much your dress will have can depend on the manufacturer. Usually you will be able to get about 1/2 inch out of each seam, so an additional inch in circumference.

What kind of neckline does the dress have? Something that follows the curve of the breast such as sweetheart neckline will be difficult to make look correct on a bigger bust than what the dress was ordered for.

I would say you have a lot of questions to ask both the surgeon and your dress salon.

For the surgeon: about how many cups sizes will your procedure likely add? Can they give you a circumference estimate? What is your recovery going to look like, how long will you be swollen? Usually breast augmentation recovery is about six weeks, and I would buffer that to say two months for sure so you are feeling your best on your big day. This will then need to be considered when scheduling your alterations, too - you want to make sure they are accounted for (but again consider swelling - you don't want to go in a week after and still be swollen).

For the salon: once you know the above answers from your surgeon, explain to them that you are considering the procedure, and here are the details (approximately what size/measurements they can expect, and when you can be expected to have those changes). They can best advise you on how much can be done!

It honestly depends on how big you’re going with the augmentation. I had my surgery in 2019 and it was the best decision so I’m so excited for you! I was a 32A and now I’m a 32C with 255cc. I can still wear a XS or size 0 even with breast augmentation. I just now fill out my shirts and dresses way more versus being flat! I think you will be fine as long as you didn’t jump more than two cup sizes!

First, I am so sorry to hear about your mom. It's sad she won't be there in person with you on your big day, but I'm sure she was so excited to have seen your dress and will be so happy for you to feel fulfilled in your body and in love.

In terms of your breast augmentation impacting how your dress fits, it really depends on how much bigger you are going as well as how the dress fits now. If you are getting a breast augmentation because you have always felt small up top and like you don't fill out your clothes and you currently don't fill out the top of your dress, its possible an augmentation won't negatively impact the fit or require additional alterations.

I would absolutely consult with a surgeon for advice on your final size, recovery timeline, etc. Do this ASAP so you can get a better idea of when your surgery might happen. With a wedding in October, its possible you could do your surgery, recover fully, and have your fittings finalized after, all before your wedding day.

Hello Caitlin. The downtime for a 45 minute breast aug is a week. I had about a month of soreness because my surgery was under the muscle and my pectoral muscles were very strong from training. Plus, I went from a full B to a DD (450cc). If you also have a breast lift, there will be more pain and recovery involved. You should recover well in time for your wedding in October, but if you have training plans, I would adjust them as you should limit upper body work. But, daily massages can help prevent encapsualation. You will wear a bra all the time, including sleeping.

I second the others in asking your doctor the rough cup changes and call your seamstress if your neckine can accomodate these changes. Seamstresses can accomodate growing pregnancies, I'm sure they can access.

As for dress support, I was surprised wedding dresses don't accomodate bras, but just remember your implants will not fall, move, or weigh like natural breasts. They may not need that much. Congratulations on moving forward with the vision you and your mom had for your wedding. You will be fine.

October in hindsight isn't very far away to book the surgery, do pre-op appointments, have the surgery, and recover. After a boob job, your "final" boobs don't settle for awhile, so even if you're feeling fine and recovered you could still not be at optimal results by Oct. Personally, I would hold off on the augmentation until after the wedding. If a large bust is what you desire for your day, I would seek options that can be sewed in to the dress or worn with your dress style. Victoria Secret has this amazing push-up bra with a 2 cup sizing up difference. For photos and a sense of what you'd have after the surgery it could be a good option..

As for if the dress could support your bust, depending on materials, its cut, etc. it very well could work. Many petite girls in other areas have large busts and don't size up exponentially for their dresses Smiley smile. If you do go through with the surgery before the wedding and alterations in the bust aren't able to happen, can you buy the dress a size up to accomodate?
