Wedding dress alterations-average price?

Bride, on July 27, 2019 at 11:29 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
I visited a seamstress with 5 star reviews across the board. She quoted me $800 to have my dress shortened in the front, taken in at the hips, the neckline raised a bit, and cups sewn in. A couple of the buttons on the back of the dress are a little loose so she’s going to reinforce those as well. Does this sound like a reasonable price point for what I’m getting done?

The best answer is - it depends.

Depends on what material the skirt is for shortening it up. A tulle skirt only needs a scissor cut...often no hemming necessary. A solid fabric like taffeta or silk needs a stitched hem. An intricate lace patter may need to be shortened from the waist, which means removing the skirt from the bodice to shorten and re-attach.

Neckline raised? How much beading is on the bodice? Are there beads and crystals that will need to be hand-sewn back on? Is there a distinct lace pattern to the bodice that will need to be matched up?

The same alterations can vary wildly in price. It just depends on what your original dress has in the way of material and embellishments, and how much hand-work will be needed to make the dress look like it WASN'T altered.

My dress is lace with lots of beading, especially around the neckline...so that would make sense. Thank you for the perspective!

I had my first alterations at today and my total will be $35, so $800 would make my head explode. BUT I needed a lot less done, just the bodice taken in.
I would get at least one more quit for comparison.

Mine is just about $800. My dress has lace so that added to the cost and my dress is fuller so my bustle is a little more complicated. I need to get it hemmed (only small amount), taken in, and have cups added.

    That'll do it.

My daughter's dress was layers of tulle at the skirt which needed just a touch of hem, but she wanted a sweep train instead of the longer one that was there. The seamstress spent all of 30 minutes just slicing up the tulle and the lining - no sewing at all and it was done.

The complication were the sleeves. The bodice and sleeves were all beaded with Swarovski crystals. To alter the sleeves, all the beading had to be removed by hand, the sleeves tightened up, then the seamstress had to re-attach the crystals, one by one, to match the pattern the designer had intended. VERY labor intensive. Total cost for the alterations was $600, and I'm sure the bulk of it was that beading as it had to take hours to get it all re-attached.

Wow, that sounds like a TON to me. My daughter is having a bustle added, straps shortened, sides taken in, and cups added. All for $180, and her dress is lace which is harder to work with sometimes.

I went to get a second opinion with another seamstress with a 5 star rating. She quoted me $450, and she’s throwing in a bustle as well! I’m glad I went and got a second opinion. Thank you guys for the advice!
