Wedding dress alterations advice please

Mackenzie, on March 2, 2022 at 2:22 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
Hello,

I need some advice about my wedding dress- I would super appreciate it!
I have had some buyers remorse with this dress mostly due to the top of it. I loved it at first, but realized I really would actually like long sleeves and after putting it on a few times, the top is just uncomfortable. I really wish I could go back in time to my excited emotion driven recently engaged self to give advice on how to be smart about dress shopping, but alas here I am. 😊
My thought of a solution was to remove the top lace part and to replace it with a topper with sleeves. Underneath the lace top is just a satin bodice that looks like it can disconnect easily by opening up the seams. I also need to get the bodice shortened so that the waist sits more below my bust.
Does anyone have an idea of how much it would cost an affordable tailor to do this? If the price is really high I'm wondering if I should just get a different dress for cheap, but I would hate to waste the money I already put into this. Or I was thinking I could try to do it myself with my MIL to be and her sewing machine but I'm afraid we would ruin it. It just seems so easy! I have spoken with the consignment shop I got it from and I can't exchange it, only consign, so that's not an option.
So anyways I got myself into this, but I am just looking for advice if anyone has some! Thank you all dearly for reading! I attached a few pictures for reference.Wedding dress alterations advice please 1Wedding dress alterations advice please 2

Unless you have a good amount of sewing experience I wouldn't take this on yourselves. Removing the lace would take away all the structure at the top of the dress, and it would be a big undertaking. I don't know what area you are in, but in my area this would easily be 800+ in alterations, especially when you account for needing to basically buy a whole new top for the dress. Maybe your area is less expensive? Either way, I would suggest setting up an appointment with a seamstress and bringing up your concerns, be upfront that you are looking for a quote to decide if you should keep this or call it a loss and move on.

Although the lace looks 'easy to separate' the whole back would be thrown off. Those buttons on the actual satin part of the gown would either need to be taken off as well, or save the buttons from the lace top and resew them --- including the loops -- back on to the new topper. I can't tell if the sash part by your waist is easily removed/moved, but I think that is where a lot of your unhappiness with the fit comes in. I really love this gown on you - the top is truly stunning and it sure makes you look amazing. Again, I think a lot of the fit issues is with that satin band around your middle. I would talk to a seamstress and get her opinion -- I would NOT recommend you attempt any alterations yourself unless you or mom have years of experience. Best of luck, and keep us posted as to your solution!

I think you look lovely in it, and maybe you could get a shawl or lace jacket. Otherwise, all you can do is call some seamstresses for advice. I undertook some minor alterations myself on my dress with the understanding that I might ruin it lol (all worked out fine), so if you're comfortable with that risk, give it a go! You can always get something else if it fails but at least you know you tried.

It's a beautiful dress. Do they not do alterations there where you bought it? You can always take it to David's Bridal for alterations. They can make it into a long sleeve and move the center up.
