Wedding ceremony but already married

Melissa, on November 18, 2015 at 10:53 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Hello all, I just had a few questions. Me and my husband have been married 2 years but we never had a ceremony. We didn't even have a courthouse one. We just went to a courthouse and signed a paper that we agreed to be married. We live in Texas by the way. We do want to have a ceremony, for the experience and to celebrate with family and friends. Just wanted to know if it would be called a wedding or a vow renewal since we're already married? But we never said our vows so would it just be a wedding ceremony? It will almost feel a little silly considering we will be getting married and are already married, but we still want the ceremony. Anyone in or know someone in a similar situation?

We were married in our home with our immediate family and BP. We refer to our upcoming ceremony as our wedding. ETA: You get to decide if it's your wedding or a vow renewal.

Vow renewal. You are already married.

Yep! It's a vow renewal. You got married two years ago.

I say vow renewal too. If you were doing it a couple months later, I'd call it a wedding but two years is a long time.

Another vote for vow renewal. At two years, you're no longer newlyweds. ETA spelling

A wedding is when you get married; your wedding was at the courthouse, even if it was unceremonious.

I normally associate vow renewals with milestone anniversaries. What you are planning seems odd to me, but if it makes you happy then go for it.

What about a "celebration of marriage" or something similar to that? Ultimately, it can be called whatever you want to call it, but you should be cautious about deceiving your guests. Do they know you're already married?

I say renewal. Whatever you want to call it is fine. A celebration of marriage is good.

OP - I live in Texas and have no clue what 'document' you signed agreeing to be married. In Texas, you are married when the signed marriage license is processed at the county clerk (Lucy correct me if I am referencing the wrong point of contact) or via common law. But, under common law there is no paperwork. This sounds fishy

If everyone knows, call it a vow renewal. If no one does, call it whatever you want.

If you signed a marriage certificate, you're married.

My cousins did this and it was called a "love celebration" I think. But I think what Rosemary said is good.
