Wedding canopy (Chuppah)

Fran, on February 21, 2010 at 4:02 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

Is anyone using a canopy to stand under to say their vows. I am not of the Jewish faith, but I love the chuppah that is used during the ceremony. So FH and I are creating our own. I just think they are beautiful! some are very simple and some are over the top. We are using the local VFW for our ceremony and reception and I thought this would be a great way to dress up the hall for photo ops too. I will try to post a picture. My Mom came across some 20 yds of white sheer fabric, and I bought lots of lights during xmas. Pvc piping for the frame. Am I nuts? I just want something special.

We're standing in a gazebo for ours, but I've seen all sorts, canopies, arches, pillars. Anything goes it's your day

I love the look of chuppahs! I considered having one but I'm just going to have two 72-inch columns with draping. It will look similar to the front of the chuppah you posted.

Looking forward to seeing how yours turns out. I've seen DIY instructions using PVC. Sounds relatively straight forward.

I LOVED 2D bride's version of the chuppah! She used one of those pop up gazebos and bought fabric, used the fabric from the original gazebo to create a pattern.. anyway instead of me rattling on.. here's her DIY blog about it (she's AWESOME by the way & a WW former bride!!!)

I imagine there are soo many possibilities for this and with cheaper fabric it could be done for way less!

I have 2 chuppahs that I rent and decorate. I actually use it more for non-Jewish weddings than Jewish weddings. I have had several brides use it for their ceremony, then they move their Sweetheart table under it and it decorates the reception. PVC has red writing on it. Make sure you cover it with something. It will show through the sheer fabric and look cheap. Also, make sure you put bases at the bottom of the legs. Chuppahs can be very "tippy". You may want to just rent a frame. What will you do with all the materials after the wedding? Many florists and rental companies offer chuppahs. Good Luck!

@ MJ I plan on doing the samething w/ my sweetheart table, too as for the bases we are going to use flowerpots (large ones) for the tippy issue as for the leftover materials, I own my own home and some of the pvc is already spoken for, as with the sheer material. which my Mom picked up for free. Thanks for your suggestions and encouragement Smiley smile

Sounds perfect. There are lots of great decorating ideas on line. I have a couple of different ones on my website, more modern with branches and sheer fabric, and more traditional with flowers and tulle. Have fun and come back and post pictures after the wedding!

We are having a Jewish wedding so yes we will have a Chuppah. You are not nuts for making one, they are pretty simple to do using the PVC and terra cotta planters to hold the legs securely.

We were going to use one, but the venue we found has a gazebo. I think they are beautiful and its awesome that you are making it yourself.

I love the way they look, I might need to leave some pictures of them out in the open for FH to look at, I know he could throw together a simple frame real quick.
