Wedding cancellation insurance for coronavirus

Danielle, on March 31, 2020 at 10:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

We’re supposed to get married in May, but due to the coronavirus it turns out it’s probably not happening. We purchased a wedding cancellation policy with WEDSAFE (which is nationwide) in January before we knew about this pandemic. I called WEDSAFE to see if we would be covered and they told us NO. Thankfully, my fiancé is an attorney who uses insurance companies and knows all about the stuff insurance companies like to pull. **READ YOUR CONTRACTS** Our contract with WEDSAFE says nothing about not covering a pandemic. In fact, the contract does not list things that are covered, it only lists what’s NOT covered, and guess what? A pandemic/virus is not listed. So in the event that we do have to make a claim to the insurance company and they deny it, we’ll be filing a lawsuit.
If you or anyone you know is in this situation, please read your contract or have an attorney take a look at it. If you are a bride-to-be in the state of Florida and are in this situation, my fiancé can help you out as well. Just message me

You should also report to your state Attorney General. Insurance has to be licensed in a state to do business. So they can bring actions against companies conducting fraud or unscrupulous practices.

I also want to add that you need to look at your venue and vendor contracts closely as well. Our venue told us that we could not postpone our wedding without them penalizing us by keeping our deposit. Their reasoning is because our wedding is at the end of May and is outside the 8 week gathering ban, therefore, it’s not considered ‘force majeure’ - we looked up the definition of this term - “unforeseeable circumstances that prevent someone from fulfilling a contract.” My fiancé (again, who is an attorney who sues insurance companies and reads contracts for a living) says this pandemic can arguably fall under his definition.

I’m hoping this information will help brides in the same unfortunate situation. It makes me upset that in addition to ours weddings being cancelled, people are trying to take advantage of us as well.

I’m just bumping this up to the top so those that are going through this will see it. Good info! I’m lucky that my wedding is next year so I’m not in this situation, but I feel so bad for everyone that is having to postpone.
