Wedding cake if venue serves dessert

Vanessa, on April 11, 2016 at 10:02 AM Posted in Planning 0 12

We are wanting to have a wedding cake but our venue serves dessert which we have to pay for anyways even if we would skip their dessert. So our wedding planer suggested to have a small wedding cake to cut and just us having a piece and share the rest of the cake a day later with family. I feel kind of bad not giving our guests a chance to taste the cake. But it will get too costly otherwise, we are having 80 guests. Any ideas on what to do?

I mean...it's a wedding. Have a small cake for you to cut and have sheet cakes in the back. I would feel weird not having cake at a wedding.

I'd ask them to ditch the dessert and increase the size of the cake.

We're doing a small cake to cut, cupcakes, peanut butter pie and cookies (the pie and cookies are part of the catering package). Not everyone eats cake, (including my mom), so we're happy to have options available. We've invited 75 people and I think we're only doing 60 cupcakes since there will be other choices.

We are paying $5500 for the venue, and we only a quarter of that money is for the buffet because it is a small wedding the rest we can use for alcohol or dessert. I was thinking of skipping their dessert but since we have such a big amount money left to spend at the venue, it doesn't make sense to pay for a big wedding cake

I feel like if you cut the cake for all to see, people are going to think they are eating cake and probably want it. What kind of dessert do they serve? Awkward if someone approaches looking for their serving of cake only to be told there isn't any after watching you guys cut it... I don't think I would take her advice.

I wouldn't take her advice i'd get a smaller cake and have sheet cakes in the back or get cupcakes or something. Guests most likely will be looking for cake once they see you cut it.

If you want a wedding cake, then go ahead with a wedding cake. However since they are already serving dessert, you could just get a top cake to cut. That's what we did and everyone else had the desserts (we had a pastry buffet). I don't expect cake at weddings anymore. No one expected it at ours. Just some sort of dessert.

Exactly, so I think having a small wedding cake to cut and have the restaurant serve their cake/pie.

I think having a small cake (like a 6" double layer, single tier cake) that you just use for the cake cutting is fine. But if you have something that looks like a wedding cake but isn't big enough to serve your guests, I think that could be confusing and some people will be disappointed that they don't get to try the actual wedding cake.

You could do a small 2-tier display with a cutting cake on top and a few of the mini cakes on the bottom tier, then have the same type of mini cakes served to your guests. That would look more consistent.
