Wedding attire

Kristen, on December 30, 2022 at 9:04 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
I am getting married on the beach and was wondering what I should put on the invitation for attire. I don’t want anyone wearing shorts. Should I say semi-formal?

Unless you’re having a black or white tie event, attire is not listed on the invitations. You could put some thing about “suggested attire” on your wedding website, and maybe list lightweight linen pants for men. If you are having a summer wedding on a beach, though, chances are it may be quite warm and men may wear shorts anyway. If so, I would just remind myself that the comfort of your guests is more important than aesthetics.

We are getting married on the beach in May (Florida) but the reception is on the fully covered outdoor deck of the semi-upscale restaurant. On our invitations it says "smart casual", then on my website I put this:

What the heck is "smart casual"?

Guys, don't pack a suit jacket or tie! The wedding party isn't even wearing tuxes. That being said, nice dress pants and a collared shirt are perfect. Please, absolutely no jeans, cutoffs or shorts.

Gals, put those formal and evening gowns away, this is FLORIDA!! Dress pants and a nice top, or a nice "Sunday best" dress is perfect. Out of respect for the bride, please don't wear white.

It's my hope that everyone will abide by this simple request.

Unless the venue requires tuxes and gowns to enter the premises, as some do, it’s not polite or proper to list a dress code. You can’t dictate or suggest what guests wear because they are not props. No dress code is usually understood to be semi formal/cocktail by default. It’s what you see on tv and defined as Sunday Best or whatever you might wear to a holiday party.

Although it may not be "polite or proper", as a guest I really appreciate some type of guideline to follow. Nothing worse than showing up in glitter and glitz and finding everyone in sundresses or denim. In our case, the restaurant itself has a 'no denim' policy., so I felt it necessary to notate that on our invitations.

I have a similar question. Our wedding is at a country club in April. I was thinking to put "Dressy Casual" on my website. I don't want jeans though. Anyone ever hear of "Cocktail Casual". The wedding party is wearing suits and my dress is full length. I want dressy, but not formal. Any Ideas?
