website regrets

Vanda, on October 29, 2017 at 1:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Hello! I created a website with the knot thinking I would be able to customize and do some HTML but looks like I can barely change anything Smiley sad

I have a fusion indian destination wedding and lots of events scattered within 30-40 mile radius so wanted to embed and simplify things for my guests. unfortunately, invitations went out with the knot wedding website and was wondering what options do I have other than just creating a new site and say click here? can I redirect using godaddy??

Can you just use whatever features it gives you? The wedding is literally one day, then the website is irrelevant. As long as it has the information your guests need, I wouldn't stress about it.

Yeah I would probably file this in the 'not important enough to worry about' category. People will probably spend less than 5 minutes of their lives on your wedding website. List all your events and move on

Yea I am pretty sure you can put multiple events on there, so I'm not sure I understand the problem?

Why did invitations go out so early?? I couldn't possibly RSVP until March, and i'd probably lose the invitation.

Well, you can purchase a domain from GoDaddy and point it at another website, like your Knot website, but what will happen is that when you type the domain you purchased into the web address bar, it will take you to your Knot website and when you type in the address of your Knot website, it will take you to your Knot website. We did this, because we initially planned to build our own website from scratch. We bought our domain from GoDaddy, and then later, we decided that it wasn't worth the time of building a website from scratch, so we settled for using a Knot website. We didn't want our custom domain name to go to waste, so we pointed it at our Knot website so guests could type the address we paid for and automatically be taken to our Knot website.

You want to do the opposite. The settings for your Knot website don't have the option to point your Knot web address elsewhere. To the best of my knowledge, you cannot reverse engineer this from GoDaddy. You can't make a website point towards a second website from the settings of the second website. You need the ability to point from the first website, the one that you want to use the web address.

The only uncertainty I have here is with the option the Knot gives you to purchase a custom domain through them. We already had purchased a custom domain directly from GoDaddy, so we didn't opt for the custom domain option from the Knot. My understanding is that all this does is makes your web address custom (no www.theknot.com/us/yournameshere and instead you get www.yournameshere.com), but you have all the same settings as a couple who did not purchase a personalized website address through the Knot. If you did purchase a custom address from the Knot, then the big question I have for you is whether it gave you a GoDaddy account along with your purchase (or an account with another web domain service) or whether you just have your Knot account? In the event that purchase did get you a GoDaddy or likewise account, then MAYBE you have a shot at pointing your domain to a second website. However, it would not surprise me if, since the domain was purchased while creating your Knot website if there are restrictions regarding this kind of thing and pointing your domain to a different address is not allowed. My guess would be that purchasing a custom domain through the Knot does not give you a GoDaddy or similar account, anyway.

So basically, your options are to just use the website templates on the Knot or to use your Knot website's home page as a landing page with a link to your new website, and delete all the other tabs on your Knot website. The issue with option #2 is that the Knot's home page is very rigid. You won't be able to add your link until below your picture/names/date/location/countdown. Your guests would have to scroll down this page to get to the point where you're able to put in a link to another website. It will be very cumbersome and inelegant from a guest's perspective.

The best option you have is to just use the Knot website and be done with it. I hate the formatting and organization of all wedding websites because they are not set up to act like well organized websites. The very reason I chose to use the Knot over other wedding websites was that the designs are beautiful and I was able to manipulate it enough to be organized like a legit website. You do have the capability to customize the names of the tabs for each of your pages on your website, you can make it so everything isn't dumped on your home page and you have one long home page to scroll through when all of that info is available by clicking on the tab for the appropriate page/category, you can add additional events, you can delete any sections or pages you don't find to be necessary or aren't in the place that you want them. There are still some restrictions, but you can still get a well organized website that doesn't make someone who actually has experience with web design want to throw their computer across the room.

You can definitely insert a link on your Knot website. However, you can definitely add events on your Knot site.
