Waxing/Threading Upper Lip and Chin?

Eddie427, on April 16, 2014 at 10:38 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

I am 28 years old & up until now have never bothered myself with removing my blonde facial hair. I never wear foundation either because I don't like it, & my skin is pretty sensitive.

My makeup artist INSISTS that I wax my upper lip and chin right before the wedding because the foundation will stick to the hair & make it more noticeable. I definitely don't want to look fuzzy in my pictures, but I am concerned for a few reasons:

1)Will I have to continue to wax for the rest of my life after this? Will it be stubbly? Not worth it!

2)I have read that some women can break out from waxing. That would be my worst nightmare right before my wedding. My skin may already not react well to being covered in foundation. What are your experiences with this?

3)Is threading a better alternative? More or less the same?

Every time I get my eyebrows done I break out for a day or two. I was so scared the first time it happened!

1 - No, it will not be stubby at all - this is coming from a girl who's been waxing/threading since she was 10.

2 - I don't wax my lip or chin because it does break out. I thread them instead. No break outs

3 - To me they're the same. I can wax or thread my eyebrows and I have no issues whatsoever. I do find threading hurts a little more on the lip than waxing, but worth it rather than having to deal with break outs.

I recommend you try it NOW to see how you will react. You'll be red for a few minutes, but that's it. And then again, the beginning of the week of your wedding.

    1. No, you won't necessarily HAVE to, but the hair does grow back somewhat thicker. I use a small trimmer to get that area. I have to do it more often but it does the trick without my sensitive skin getting red/irritated/bumpy.

    2. I don't know anyone who "breaks out" from waxing, but if you do have sensitive skin (like me), you will experience redness, as well as possible bumps a day or two later. The redness subsides after about 12 hours, and the bumps go away in a couple of days. So, if you do wax, apply some type of powder make up to that area, and it will be less harsh on your skin. Also, depending on where you get waxed, if the wax is TOO hot upon application, that's when you see more of the redness and the bumpy irritation.

    3. I have threaded my eye brows once before, but I don't know if they do threading for the upper lip. You'd just have to ask. The pain/annoyance of waxing (for me) is about a 7 out of 10. The pain/annoyance of threading is about a 3.. I don't have NEARLY as much redness when I do threading. My biggest disclaimer on threading, DO NOT DO IT AT A MALL. Just don't. Go to a salon that offers it.

I get waxed regularly. Once I had kids my hormone levels went ALL whacky and have never gone back to "normal."

I wax 3-4 days prior to an event - never a day or two ahead and definitely NOT the day of.

I guess it depends on the individual, but after 20 years of hair removal, my hair is still fine.

    1. No you don't have to continue to wax. I go through phases where I wax or thread on a regular basis and then I don't for a while. The lip hair wont grow in stubbly.

    2. I definitely would NOT do it directly before the wedding. I would do it a week out, especially if you do waxing. My lip is more sensitive than my eyebrows, so sometimes I might have some light bumps on my upper lip for a few days. But nothing more and they disappear quickly. Just don't mess with it. Go to a LEGIT waxing studio that has different options in wax for sensitivity reasons if you are worried. Since I have switched places, I rarely have break outs.

    3. I haven't tried threading on my lip, only eye brows, because it is more prolonged pain than waxing and my upper lip is sensitive. Getting my eyebrows done is already a pain for me. lol. With threading you definitely shouldn't break out. You might be red for an hour but be ok after that.

So, I go get my eyebrows threaded. I used to get them waxed and would break out every time. I don't break out from threading and the shape is much nicer.

For your lip and chin, I looked up YouTube videos on how to thread so I do mine at home with a magnifying mirror and a bright lamp.

Definitely don't wax, especially if you have sensitive skin

I have really sensitive skin, Ive been waxed 2x and both times I was red and swollen for multiple hours and the next day I woke up with little bubble looking things all around my eye brows. they almost looked like whiteheads but I could just run my finger over them and they would go away for the time being. I wont ever wax again, I thread my eyebrows. it is painful, but its fairly fast and the redness is gone within an hour!

Why don't you just try a hair removal cream instead of waxing/threading? I use a hair removal cream for my upper lip and there is no redness or irritation after wards.

Duh, I'm forgetting Nair all together. It works for more people, but it doesn't work for me no matter how long I leave it on. Plus, the smell alone is enough to make me not want to use it, haha!

Wow! Thanks for all of the quick and helpful responses! I will maybe try threading and do a trial run further out from the wedding. Smiley smile

Also, to accurately describe the sensitivity of my skin- I tried Nair on my legs once and it caused chemical-type burns on my legs that were excruciating and I had to cover them with ointment and gauze bandages. Thankfully it only resulted in lots of scabs and no lasting scars.
