Watters gowns sizing for small bust/will taking in the chest be a problem?

Future cat, on December 26, 2016 at 7:00 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

I found the dress! It's a Watters gown, the Della, and it's exactly what I'm looking for! Wondering if there were any other brides who've worn Watters who can comment on the sizing...it seems pretty "true to size", but my measurements aren't congruent with one size. My chest is a 00, waist a 4, and hips between a 0 and 2. I think I'll probably have to order the 4 so I can zip it up and breathe, but will then have a lot to take in in the chest. Can anyone speak to whether or not having so much taken in in the chest will be a problem? Or if there were any other small chested brides with a bigger waist measurement, was it possible to take in the chest enough? I'm worried that it will have cups and even if it's pulled against my body, like when they clip it at the store, my chest won't actually fill the cups/will it look "empty"? Thank you!

I haven't gone thru the alterations process yet, but am a bit "bottom heavy" and will need my dress taken in quite a bit more on the top than the rest. My understanding is that this generally works fine, and you can have your seamstress add cups to help things look a bit more proportionate but still natural.

Oh my gosh, I almost chose that dress! But would've added straps or a keyhole back had I went with that one. So pretty! I would ask the bridal shop their opinion, they should know what size to order based on your measurements and will look at the seams to tell if it can be altered easily and by how much (to make sure that altering doesn't change the shape or take too much away from the detail of the dress). Good luck!

You will definitely need alterations. My dress fits my body great, but not so much in the chest! The lady doing my alterations said that not only will she be taking in the chest, but also sewing in pads to push my boobs up so it doesn't look weird.

Thanks for your tips, ladies! Dress shopping has made me so aware of my body and self conscious about certain areas :/ I don't have a lot of curves and I feel like it's really evident in a dress. This dress makes me feel pretty and creates more of a "feminine shape" which is awesome. Did dress shopping really seem to bring out body image issues for anyone else? It's just made me feel really disproportionate.

Watters bride here Smiley smile any good seamstress should be able to take it in. Maybe talk to seamstress before ordering and explain to them.

Don't let dress shopping stress you out. Wedding gowns are a world of their own, every single gown I tried on was HUGE on me and had to be rolled, clipped and pinned. My heart dropped a little when she took my measurements and told me I needed to order 00 and it will still be big, since I've been working REALLY hard to gain weight and I finally reached a jean size 3/4 but I reminded myself that they size gowns WAY different than typical clothing.

It's a beautiful dress and you'll make a beautiful bride!

I also purchased a Watters dress! Love yours! Mine was a sample and is a size 14 and I am probably a size 2-4 according to my bridal consultant. She assured me their seamstress would be able to make the alterations to fit me perfectly. We are almost date twins so I won't have an update for you sooner but I would always go a little bigger than you may think if you are in between because they can always take it in!

Love your dress, Lauren!!! I love the style of most Watters gowns!!! And thanks, Kristen. I have to just get past the numbers and not get hung up on that. Despite the chest measurement indicating that I'm small chested, I generally don't really feel that insecure about my chest size and have felt like it was proportionate to my body. I feel more self conscious that my waist is only a couple of inches smaller than my chest-somehow I never seemed to really notice that until there was a measuring tape around it, haha. But I've just got to keep everything in perspective-my body size is not the most important part of this wedding. Happiness is one of the most beautiful things, and being happy will in turn result in feeling/looking beautiful.

That’s my dress too! I am adding straps to it though. I’m like the opposite. I have a big chest and I’m freaking out that sewn in cups just won’t be enough.

I had similar concerns with my Willowby by Watters dress. My bridal consultant measured me as an almost exact 4 (chest is a size 2), but I’ve always been a size 6 and was worried I was down an extra 5 lbs because of all the shopping stress. I decided to order the 6, but then spent a week and a half agonizing about whether I made the right choice. I was really concerned that the top would be massive on me, and because my dress has an open back, it would just be a sagging mess. I ended up getting remeasured to calm down (and I actually tried on a size 6 in a WToo gown) and eventually just trusted that alterations, done right, will fix any issues I have with my dress. Fingers crossed I feel the same way when it comes in lol.
