Waterford: Worth the Hype?

Picture frames for $150-250? Butter dish for $155? Snack bowls for $100?? I mean, don't get me wrong, Waterford makes some beautiful pieces but are they worth it?? Am I missing something because that seems heinous. Also, I noticed on a friend's Macy's registry (wedding is in the next month or so)...

Also, I noticed on a friend's Macy's registry (wedding is in the next month or so) that almost all of their items were deeply discounted; some as much as 50% (including Lenox dinnerware/flatware/serveware; even the Vitamix was $200 off). Only a few things said "Last Chance," so I understand the reasoning behind that. The others just said "Sale." Is it standard for Macy's to mark down items whenever it gets closer to the wedding? I didn't see anything online that eluded to a store-wide sale of the applicable items. In any case, this would not only be good to know for the sake of gift-giving, but also for those debating if they should use Macy's for their own registry.

That's a great idea, @Kate! I don't know why that hasn't donned on me! Zola does allow you to add items from other sites. I really only have a few pieces of China that I really want from Macy's, so not enough to justify creating an additional registry. I'm glad to hear you love the bakeware. Everything I've read on them really drove home the idea that they are the best in their class and last the longest. Definitely investment pieces! At least, that's what I'll tell FH Smiley winking. As for the KitchenAid, there's SO much you can do with it beyond baked goods. A good friend of mine uses hers almost everyday for various recipes. However, one item I just don't feel comfortable adding is the Vitamix. I know ppl swear by them, but I don't know if I could justify the extra $200-300 compared to the Ninja.

Just posting because of the coincidence: I got two waterford crystal glasses (in their boxes with certificates of authenticity) for $10 at a yard sale this weekend. It was a glorious, glorious day!

Ours gets hauled out on holidays. Crystal and sterling are leftovers from a bygone era. I bought some in England at a cheaper price. You're paying for the name Waterford.

The John Roca range of Waterford crystal is very contemporary, the wine glasses are lovely, but it reflects in the price as your paying for the designers name.

@Rachel, that is so lucky! Good for you! Maybe if I go garage sale hopping in the super wealthy part of town I'll score a sweet deal like that. Smiley smile As I mentioned previously, the Godinger brand is really similar to Waterford but a fraction of the price. It's still crystal and traditional in style, but it also has a couple different options for the more modern bride/couple: chrome and marble, chrome and wood, etc. Macy's has them as does Zola!

Waterford is expensive because it is the best crystal glassware brand in the world. It’s due tot he fact that each design is unique and they never repeat the same design its always different also partnered with the fact that to this day Waterford glassware are all still hand cut and hand blown it requires more intricacy in the making. They aren’t just a status symbol they are much more durable and unique. They are also quite collectible and because there is a market for their collectibility, their value increases as time goes by, a Waterford one of a kind is an investment. My mum has a Christmas collection of champagne flutes sold for $1500AUD each, they are now near impossible to find and worth nearly $5,000 AUD each.
