Want to change real diamond ring to a fake one

Taylor, on February 24, 2020 at 11:25 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 8

Hi there! My fiance and I have come into a financial bind, and I thought it would be a good idea to maybe switch my real diamond ring (we are still paying the financing at diamonds direct for it) and buy a cheaper fake one that looks similar. And then buy a real one later on when we can actually afford it. Has anyone had experience with doing this? Or have any recommendations on what we could do? I know we would probably lose money if we tried to sell it for what we bought it for, but it might help with not having to pay for it right now. Thanks for the help!

Not sure if you’d get a good amount of money back versus what you paid for it! Might be better to just stick with it!

Diamond mark up is pretty high and if you are have been paying interest on your ring, you're likely already paying way more than what it is actually valued at. Selling your diamond or even pawning it will not get you nearly what you paid/are paying for it. I'm not sure you will come out on top in this situation. I would find other items to cut back on.

If you are looking for good diamond alternatives, I got a BEAUTIFUL white sapphire engagement/wedding band set at Zales for about $100.00 ($180.00 I think but I bought it on sale)

I think you will be disappointed with the price you would be able to get for a pre-loved diamond.

How would you switch it? Meaning sell it back to your original vendor? They may not even offer a price that’s pays off the balance. You’d have to check with them. If you try to sell it to another diamond dealer or even on the secondary market to another consumer, you’d only get a small fraction of what you paid, especially if you originally paid retail prices. Unless it has really high specs (4Cs) and is of a large range carat size, you highly unlikely to ease any financial issues by selling a diamond. And if you want to replace it later, you’d end up paying retail price again. Also, you might have to pay the labor fees for then to open the prongs, take the diamond out, and reset it with an alternative stone.

Talk to your sales rep at Diamonds Direct. I believe there’s a diamond buyback process, but generally that’s marketed for upgrading your center stone. Nonetheless, it’s worth asking them what they might be able to do for you.

I would try to find other ways to make extra cash... not because having a real ring is essential but because engagement rings are like new cars. You will not get the value that you paid for it. At that point, I don't even see a reason to try to sell it. Could you pick up a side job? I recently applied for a job as a venue attendant. It's obviously for weddings so it should only be on the weekends. You might be able to find something similar near youSmiley smile

Agreed. You'll likely get far less than you paid for it, and then when you go to buy your new diamonds in the future you'll pay the same markup all over again.

If you are buying a ring you don't yet have (like choosing your wedding band) and want to go for a less expensive diamond alternative and then upgrade later, I think that makes sense, but I wouldn't sell a diamond you already have for quick cash. You'll just lose out on the deal.
