Walmart Cupcakes for Dessert?

Molly, on September 30, 2017 at 10:15 AM Posted in Planning 0 28

Hi everybody,

I want to have cupcakes for the dessert at my wedding. After pricing out several bakery options, I am seriously leaning towards buying cupcakes at Walmart or a grocery store. I have even found some reasonably priced "cupcake tree platters" on Amazon. By choosing grocery store cupcakes and our own cupcake tree platters, we would slash our dessert budget by two thirds. Has anyone else here done something similar? Any advice? Thanks!

Have you tried the actual bakery cupcakes? I personally love the Kimberley Cupcakes brand at Wal-Mart...however, I think some others here may find it going the cheap route. Just make sure if you do it, you get everything as fresh as possible.

Grocery store cupcakes often have that shelf-stable frosting made with shortening that has that nasty mouthfeel.

I understand budget concerns, but I'd go to an actual bakery. You don't have to tell the bakery the cupcakes are for a wedding, if you're worried about inflated costs.

I think walmart cakes and cupcakes are disgusting. Their frosting is far to sweet and it makes my teeth hurt. I have heard publix and costco makes awesome cakes!

I think Publix is better. But seriously. They are cupcakes. I have several friends in my circle who occasionally do baking for money and are incredibly reasonable. Of course you need to choose someone super reliable.

Our cake is coming from Walmart. Every event my family has done (bridal shower, graduation, birthday), we always get the cake from Walmart. They do great tiered cakes! I think it's personal opinion. Publix definitely has the best bakery as far as grocery stores go, in my opinion.

Costco has really good cake. We are doing cheesecake from Sam's club. I say go for it if you think it really tastes great.

We are doing cupcakes from a local bakery, they are providing the tower and to go boxes for free, which helps my budget.

I would try the Walmart ones and see what you think. I do think Costco is a good option too- but I don't know the price difference.

Our cupcakes are coming from Hyvee! They look great and they taste really good, plus they don't mark them up for a wedding.

If you have a Hy-Vee, definitely try them! They are almost the same price as Walmart but are soooo much better and you have many more options for flavors. We don't have publix but I always read good things on here. If this is what you want to do, I don't see any problem with it at all.

I personally prefer Publix over Walmart but I say go with what you can afford.

We are ordering cupcakes from Whole Foods. They are $2 each and have a lot of different flavors. Out of all the fancy bakery cupcakes FH and I tried, we actually like Whole Foods cupcakes the most.

I think this is fine, but another route would be to buy frozen novelty desserts from the grocery store to set out as a dessert bar option. These are delicious, and not as variable in quality or taste as Walmart cupcakes, which can hit or miss

Personally I vote go to an actual bakery . . I mean grocery cakes are for kids party's . .. if I was a guest o would notice you went really cheap .. and wouldn't finish the cupcake .. hence you actually waste money

The only time I'd side-eye grocery store dessert at a wedding would be if you and the BP ate fancy bakery cake and the rest of the guests were left with Wal-Mart.

Plan the wedding you can afford...

I think grocery store cupcakes are a good idea BUT not from Walmart-their cakes and cupcakes are not good IMO. If you're near Publix definitely get the cupcakes from them! They have the best grocery store bakery! Good luck!

Try some local bakers first. And grocery stores. If those aren't as good as the Walmart cupcake, then get the Walmart ones. But most commercially prepared cupcakes are full of sugar and preservatives and taste like crap.
