Walk me down the aisle

Stevie'sFutureWife, on December 8, 2013 at 4:58 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

I have a question. My father passed away in 2009. I asked my Godfather to walk me down the aisle because he has always been there for me and I don't have any brothers. However, my biological dad is very hurt that I don't want him to walk me down the aisle. He wasn't in my life much until after my dad died. Is there anything I can do to make him feel less upset?

Nope. He's choosing to be upset. You can't control that. He should know he hasn't been there, whereas your godfather has.

Just because he's your biological dad doesn't mean it's his right to walk you down the aisle.

    Good luck!

No, he just has to realize he is now facing the consequences of his choices to not be in your life.

My friend had a similar issue when she was married. She grew up with her step dad and didn't have much of a relationship with her biological father. She didn't want her biological father involved really but also didn't want to hurt his feelings. She had her step dad walk her down the aisle and had the father-daughter dance with her biological father. She later danced with her step dad and had pictures taken but it wasn't the "announced" father-daughter dance.

ETA: You can only be walked down the aisle once, but you can dance all night.

It wasn't really his fault he wasn't in my life. My family didn't allow him to be. I am close to him now, but I still don't think he has earned the right to walk me down the aisle.

All I can give in advise is maybe sit down with him and explain how you feel. I have a similar situation. My dad died 9 years ago and because I have such a great relationship with my stepdad so he will walk me down, but my sister asked me "how do you think dad would feel if he was alive?" You honestly have to just let it go and ultimately do what is going to make you happy and when it comes to my situation I told my sister I felt like my dad would understand and its not about how they feel but how you feel about the person walking you down.

I like that idea of having your god father walk you down the aisle and then father daughter dance with your dad.

I like the idea of the father daughter dance with bio dad and having my God father give me away. I may split the dance in half though or just not do one. I want to dedicate a father-daughter dance to my Papa (that's what I called him growing up) and give all the little girls there a chance to dance with their daddy. I just don't want to start a war because my adoptive family can't stand my bio dad.

The dedication dance sounds so beautiful! That is so sweet of you and I think would be a great way to honor your Papa.

That happened to a friend of mine. This is what she did - she had a red carpet doubled (one inside the church, one outside the church). The stepfather walked her down halfway and her bio dad walked her down the other half. It was nicely done and included them both. As far as the dance, dance with them both. The dj could announce the first father, and then 1/2 through the song, introduce the other father. Be sure to have two of your bridesmaids right there to dance with the other father. I think this will work and make everyone happy.

@Esther-that sounds like a good idea. I could have my bio dad walk me from the car to the church and then my Godfather could walk me down the aisle of the church. I will have to do 1/2 and 1/2 for the dance.
