Vows

This maybe a silly question, but if your writing your own vows... how do you know when to exchange rings? What does the officiant say?

This really depends on a lot of things. The officiant for instance may have his own template he uses. Mine did. You may also have your own reasons to putting things in different orders, etc.

The ring exchange isn't part of the vows, it should be completely separate and your officiant should provide scripting for it.

My officiant has his own template, but said we could move things around if we wanted to. It says we will do our own vows before we exchange rings.

Normally the ring exchange is separate from the vows. The officiant will know when to transition from vows, to unity ceremony (candle lighting, sand pouring, tree planting, etc.) to ring exchange to introducing of the bride and groom

We read our vows and then afterwards, our officiant declared it was time to exchange rings and then we did that.

There’s really no right or wrong way to do things at your own ceremony, but look up some sample ceremony scripts to give yourself an idea of the flow!

Each officiant is different, so it's hard to say. We said our vows first then exchanged rings when the officiant said to. I would talk to them and see how they do things
