Vows....anyone just winging it?

JanisV, on February 10, 2015 at 3:53 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

I received an email from our minister of possible vows we could do on our wedding day...Idk, maybe it's just me, but shouldn't these come from the heart? I understand that in front of a large group of people and with wedding day jitters, this would be bravely stupid..lol but I'm going to be in front of maybe 10 people...I know what I want to say (the 2 years of public speaking classes will FINALLY come in handy..lol) Anyone else doing or has done vows without a script??

Meh, I'm not doing personalized (Catholic wedding) but I feel it'd be good to kind of jot notes of what you may want to say. I never really got the reading directly off of a paper either. :/ I would practice with potential vow stuff in a mirror if it were me, it's an important one time thing!

No! I wrote mine in December! I don't want to get up there and stutter (which is what I would do if I didn't have them written out). Also, I just watched the friends episode where Monica and Chandler recited their own vows and they were AWFUL! Gotta make sure they're actually vows, not just, "I love you THIIIIIIIS much"

We scripted them out, i was afraid we would forget something. i couldn't have been able to be heartfelt just on the spot! but with only 10 people i guess if you're comfortable with it then go for it!

I would not wing your wedding vows. They are promises and commitments that you are making to each other. Not just "I love you, your amazing etc." Which is what I feel like most people would say if they winged them.

Nope-- but I did watch an episode of Bridezillas on Netflix the other day where the bride did it! In all fairness, the entire wedding was a cluster.

Yes they should come from the heart and no you shouldn't wing it. Read it from a note, your iPhone, a pretty book, a banana, but don't try to memorize them because you'll be dreading those two minutes for the entire ceremony that comes first.

Go to my pinterest page. You'll find plenty of examples.

Please, don't wing it. I've seen couples get so emotional that they can barely follow a "repeat after me" script. No, this is not the time for improv,

I know you're trying to end this thread, but.... DH and I wrote our own vows but did NOT write them down, so yes-- we ended up 'winging it'. The officiant filled in enough to make it legal, and we have been happily married many years. Still-- write it down or just repeat after your officiant.

I would be a blabbering mess if I tried to do that. Too much extra stress on a stressful day.

There are contributions from about eight different officiants on it so there is a lot of variation.

@Celia-- definitely writing my vows on a banana, thanks!

(To be fair, my xanga-- remember those?-- back in 2003 was yum_bananas, so it's *almost* appropriate)

If my couples want to write their own vows, I print them onto pretty paper to hand to them at the appropriate point in the ceremony (that way, they're not fishing out wadded up bits of paper from pockets or bosom). I also include their vows in the keepsake ceremony booklet I have them.

I wrote mine based on suggestions from here actually. I was going to attempt to memorize them, but I'm so glad they were printed because I completely blanked lol.

Keep 'em short and simple though. People get bored and antsy. For some reason, I made everyone cry and I was surprised to discover this.

Im writing some notes and then winging it from there. it seems to robotic for me to read them off a page, so ill hit some key points i have written down and just go from there.

I'm not doing personalized. We are doing a Catholic wedding. However, I plan to write him my own vows in our letters that we will give each other.

FH is determined to do this, but I plan on spending every waking moment from here out convincing him other wise.

Mine will for sure be written down, I will for sure forget something if not.
