Vows....and anxiety

Katie, on May 28, 2021 at 6:00 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 2 17
My fiance and I want to exchange our own vows, but im slightly nervous... only because I hate talking in front of a lot of people, don't get me wrong I know it's our families but I just have that bad anxiety with talking in front of a lot of people.
How did you Stay calm through it all ? Any tips.
I know we still have awhile but I'm just trying to get all the advice I can . Thank you

I don’t get nervous with public speaking but I get very emotional and cry when I’m that happy... sooooo I tried to keep things light and goofy. I think I might have been a little too silly, but I didn’t cry so mission accomplished. You’ll be ok- just breathe!!!

I'm so nervous I'm going to be a crying mess, but hopefully I will get through it! My fiance is having our officiant read his and then he will repeat, he said that would make him less nervous. Just a thought!

Are you doing a first look? Could you exchange your vows privately before or after the ceremony and just do more standardized vows during the ceremony? I’ve seen this done!

Oh I love that idea! I’m also afraid I’ll be crying and no one will understand me lol. That’s definitely something to consider

We’re doing a private vow exchange. I’ll still walk down the aisle (we both hate the idea of a first look), our officiant will welcome everyone to the ceremony and say some opening words, scripture etc then FH and I will depart from the ceremony area to exchange vows privately to one another while our harpist plays for guests. When we return from saying our vows, we will finish the ceremony with the more traditional stuff (ring exchange, kiss, walk down the aisle) for our guests to witness. We both loved this idea as vows are so intimate and not for anyone else to hear but us.

Nearly all photographers recommend first looks to alleviate nerves so you can focus solely on the officiant and your fiancé during the ceremony. Another option is having vows that can be repeated instead of writing your own. Because legally something needs to be said during the ceremony (intent and vows).

I completely relate to this - I'm super anxious about personalized vows and speaking at my wedding. For me as someone who's always had anxiety with public speaking, my successful speaking roles have been good because I practiced them over and over. It helps me to practice them until I can sort of separate the meaning/emotion from the words and think about it as a performance, although I can see how this might take something special away from what personalized vows are. I try to think about how when the time comes to read them, it will be my turn to talk, and all people really want to hear is how much I love my FH and that I'm excited to be marrying him (which is easy to convey when it's true!) Just know that everyone listening is on your side supporting you, and people expect (and are often charmed by) the bride and groom to be emotional at a wedding, so you don't need to be embarrased by it

    I'm just sooooo nervous.

Thankfully I have a little bit yet to get it all down and try to shake the nerves away.
I probably will be practicing them on people til the day of the wedding. I just hope I don't mess up.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    I'm not sure yet.
I kinda want to but my fiancé wants to wait til he sees me coming down the aisle, maybe I can talk to him into it but I have no idea yet.
