Vow feedback

Samantha, on August 29, 2020 at 4:29 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 2 28

Hello!

We're writing our own vows and I'd love some feedback on mine. Please, let me know what I can work on. I want everything to be perfect! Thank you Smiley heart

If I loved you less, I may be able to talk about it more. But I don’t know how to sum up ten years: The devotion and pain, the bond and commitment, the sacrifices and years. Or how to tell you about the love I’ve given you, that you’ve me. I don’t know how to sum up a lifetime of love, dreams, struggles, and promises into a few short minutes. I can only hope that an eternity is enough time to show you what you mean to me.

You have been with me my entire adult life and I have experienced so many firsts with you. The first time I fell in love, the first time I got a dog, the first time I moved in with somebody, the first time I baked a cake with no mixing bowl, no spoons, no pans, and egg substitute for your first birthday in the States. I’ve been with you for the disasters. Like that cake. And the triumphs I have challenged you and grown with you. I am so proud of the person you have become and am so grateful for the person you have helped me to be. You have made me smarter, stronger, kinder than I could ever be without you. It has been such a privilege to watch you grow into the man you are today and I am so excited to grow with you for the remainder of our lives.

Over the last ten years we have helped each other for better and worse, richer and poorer, in sickness and in health. I promise to continue the commitment we’ve shown to each other over the years and to help you thrive regardless of the circumstances. I promise to be your partner in every aspect of our lives. I promise to listen to you, care for you, and of course, love you always. I promise to be a safe space for your secrets and vulnerabilities. I promise to devote myself to your happiness and to achieving your dreams, to put you before myself and to cherish everyday because it means another moment with you. I promise to choose you every day for the rest of my life. I promise to love and accept you for the person you are and to love you as you grow and change. I promise to love you in a million big and little ways for a million big and little reasons, to love you every way a person can be loved. To love you gently and fiercely, passionately and quietly, without reservation or condition. I promise that I love you today and always.

Hola! Do you know what your partner's vows will be like? Something we did was have a mutual friend listen to each of us privately (to keep it a surprise from each other) - he timed it and listened for tone/ not repeating some stories, yadda yadda. I found it really re-assuring and helpful!

Your vows have a serious and romantic tone, so I'd just want to make sure your partner's match that same sentiment (if that's important to you.) Our friend told my partner to "lighten his up since mine had a laugh or two in them, and it was important to me that we didn't have one of us being like THEY ARE MY GREATEST LOVE and the other going "I'll even love you when you burp" or something, or having one be a saga and the other be 30 seconds.

Good job getting so far ahead in writing them!

I hadn't thought of sharing them with a third party, but that's a great idea! He knows how long mine are (both the word count and how long they take to read) and the basic structure, but that's it. This is a great way to keep the mystery alive while maintaining some consistency!

They are great! We also had a common friend read both of ours to make sure we were going on the same direction.

Those are beautiful! You could write or print them on a card for the officiant to carry until time to read them. As long as your ceremony includes whatever wording is required by the state for legal purposes, your vows are great as is and don't to match his in any way.

Thank you, Jana! We bought little vow books from Etsy and I’m planning on giving them to the maid of honor until the time comes.

You're welcome, I got the idea from Jamie Wolfer's channel on YouTube. To another poster's point, you can always just do you and consistency doesn't need to be a consideration.
For us, it's not so much about speaking our love to each other (if that makes sense), it's almost a bit of a performance for our friends and family to share how we feel about each other. (Because we already know - nothing will be earth shattering for him lol). So from that lense it was important for me that it be informative for them and be understandable - we are sharing our favorite stories about falling in love with each other/ why we love each other vs anything inside joke like I've heard at other's weddings. For us the vows were for other ppl to understand us better, since we are fairly private.

I'm sure your vows will be great! 👍

    Hey!
In all honesty, while beautiful, I agree that they are long. I think you can get your feelings out, and point across without bring so descriptive.
Just my opinion, for what it's worth.I think guests lose focus if the vows are too long.
The pace of the ceremony moves faster than you think and it may seem to drag at that point. I'd vote for short and sweet .My vows I wrote were under 2 mins and looking back at the video, seemed so much longer than my grooms. Again, just my opinion, since you did ask for feedback, I'm talking to you as I would any friend, with an honest opinion. No offense intended.
    Congratulations!
