Videography struggle

Marissa, on August 16, 2019 at 8:42 PM Posted in Planning 0 12
So at first I didn’t care about videography at all. I was fine with having only a photographer. But after watching wedding videos on YouTube and seeing some of my friends videos, my mind has changed. I don’t want every minute of my day recorded, but the highlight videos are really sweet and a great way to look back at the day for years to come.
The problem is....
I just can’t afford paying thousands of dollars for that memento. And this is not a diss towards videographers; they know their worth and should charge what they see fit. It’s just not something my budget can accommodate. I’m only paying $1000 for my photographer (whom I love, but she doesn’t offer the service). Videographers in my area don’t go for less than $1000 which is the only way I could afford it. So of course I’m a bit sad. Anyone else feel this way? Also, does anyone have alternatives for a videographer?

Yeah I feel the same way. I absolutely wish I could have one too but they’re just too expensive, can’t fit it in the budget. I’m just going to have my mom film our vows and first dance on her camera.

You should look on thumbtack.com or post in a local wedding Facebook page with your budget and see if you can find someone that is in that range.

I contacted a few I was interested in and asked if they had packages with less hours since I really didn’t feel it was necessary to have the videographer there the entire time. I found one that came highly recommended for $550! So maybe try asking for less time and see if you can get a deal. Good luck!

I feel you. A videographer isn’t in the budget, but I’d love to have one. There are just other things I’d rather prioritize. The only alternative I can think of is to have a friend or family member tape snippets throughout the day.

I would suggest looking up thumbtack or bark. They have all kinds of different services that charge per hour. I've ended up with someone else for mine but I did check out the websites previously and some of them look pretty dang good.

Check with a local college? Our videographer is a college student and is $550 for the whole day and does great work.

I too want a videographer but can’t fit it in the budget. I really wanted my ceremony recorded at least. I got lucky and my officiant is going to record it for us. If I had to guess he’s just going to use a go pro or something but hey its Better then nothing.

Depending on what you want maybe you could talk them down in price? We didn’t want the reception recorded, but we really did want a video of our ceremony. Once we told him that (he is also our photographer) the price went down 75%. Sometimes people are willing to work with you. If not I’d go with the other pps suggestions.

I am lucky enough to have been able to budget that in, as I model and am going to be able to get my photog for cheaper than normal. My videographer was $3500 tho... sigh. But I figure there’s a few people who won’t be with us for long and I want those VIPeople on tape to see them.... plus to see how stunning it all was in a way I can enjoy! Lol

Daughter only added a videographer at the last minute, and found someone she was really happy with on Thumbtack. I know you said you just want a short highlight video, but realize usually in order to get that awesome few minutes, the videographers have to record and edit a lot of footage (so, even though you want 4 minutes, they are going to spend HOURS recording and editing to get those 4 minutes and, of course, their time costs money). Daughter considered just having a camera set up on a tripod for the service, but knew there was a good chance the recording wouldn't be very good. She found a team that shoots by the hour for $100 per hour, including the entire unedited recording. She booked them for 7 hours and ended up with 6 hours of unedited video. Much of it is kind of random, but there is complete coverage of the ceremony, speeches, and a lot of wedding party/guest interactions both before the ceremony and at the reception. However, not many people but the B&G are going to sit through 6 hours of video. So, in addition, she purchased a 6.5 minute highlight reel for about $800. (It's awesome!) So, you might find a videographer who can offer you different services within your budget. (Daughter's videographer also let's people wait and order/buy the highlight film at a later date -- they have some couples do it for their first anniversary.) Good luck shopping around!

I would contact videographers in the area and see if they could charge you for raw footage only. Editing is expensive, so skipping edits can save you lots! In my area, raw footage ranges from 200 - 500 for just the ceremony.

I hope you can find what you're looking for Smiley smile

I searched all over insta for a newbie just starting their business and found one for $850(nyc area) I would also recommend looking at colleges with film/ art majors. To me it’s not about having a movie like wedding film, I just wanted some video of it and didn’t want to pressure any friends or fam to be stressed about trying to get videos with their phone
