Videographer... worth it or skip it?

Jennifer, on September 29, 2016 at 10:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

We are debating whether or not it is worth ~$1000 for the videography of the big day. We know that we won't get to experience EVERYTHING that day and that many people say that they regret not doing it... but is a video that will only be viewed maybe 5-10 times in our lifetime worth $1000 ?

Also, we don't want anything fancy... just the ceremony and reception introductions/special dances. But seems like all the videographers make it into a big cinematic feature. Any suggestions on keeping the cost low if we do decide to do the video?

I am skipping. I have the same opinion on only watching it 5-10 times for $1000. I have heard people say that they are great cause it catches moments that you may have missed...but I feel a camera does just as good and pictures you can display around your house...

My videographer can do just a highlight video, or add a longer video also. I also requested all the original footage and he is giving it to us for free. I would also suggest looking at videographer sites. That is how I found my videographer and he had a huge discount if you booked through the site. We paid 850 for ours for the highlight, longer video and got unlimited time and the footage added for free.

I'm skipping. I wouldn't watch it enough to justify the money. Pictures will be sufficient for us.

I'm using one to capture moments I'm afraid we'll miss. Our photographer can't be everywhere at once and we can get still pics from our video. He is also bringing a drone so I expect to see some awesome footage from that too. No way our photographer could catch those angles.

I also wanted to add that I was married before and had a video, and we watched it all the time. Family would come visit us and ask to see it too.

My videographer is my most costly thing. Even more than my dress! It's going to be like a movie of my wedding day that we will have for the rest of our lives. Our future kids will be able to watch it! Also, there will be voices of people like my grandparents that will be videographed, so when they pass away I will still have this visual memory of them. MUCH better than a picture.

I got a photography/videography package. Right before I booked them there was a bridal expo in town and they were running a great special, so I got an amazing price

That's suspiciously cheap....it's one of those personal choices and in my opinion, only worth doing with a really good videographer. Or skipping. Some love it, some are indifferent. Maybe 40% of my couples have one.

$1000 is a combination with the photography with a special. But most are much more expensive.

I personally am a huge fan of photos (and will make sure that we have 2 photographers) but my FH is the one afraid of missing out on certain moments without the video.

Thank you all with your input so far.

We weren't supposed to do videographer before but one videographer gave us idea of doing highlights. But we ended up booking an employee of ours at my previous job since he's building his portfolio. We agreed on doing highlights + ceremony for $500 which was not bad at all since we love the Highlights very much! Sharing our wedding highlights video. https://youtu.be/1mcygKC9ZzI

If your expectation is to capture EVERY detail of the wedding, I don't care if you have 18 photographers, that is missing the point. If the artists working for you are competent and great storytellers, go with it. In many cases, two photographers are redundant. (I say this having never worked with one and being known for storytelling journalism) Remember the more people you add, the more intrusive the experience everyone has.

I'm opting to do it. I'm only doing 6 hours, so they will capture our first look, ceremony, and important moments at the reception such as toasts, first dance, etc. They will not see me get ready or capture our exit. But I'm okay with that! I saved $1000 by just doing 6 hours instead of all day.

I was against them.. never thought I'd watch it.. until I kept seeing these beautiful highlight reels.. then I started wanting one... and I want something to show the kids one day, better than someone's cell phone. I'm happy with our decision. I don't think many people regret having thm.

I agree with @Maui . I want to be able to hear the voice of my loved ones after they leave us in 20 years. I want to see and hear the laughter and so on. It was a big deal for me, so we found a way to make it work. We just met our videographer in person a month ago , and now I'm even more excited!!
