Videographer: Worth It or Not?

Kelly, on March 10, 2020 at 8:59 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

Looking for opinions here.

We are getting married in September so a little less than 6 months out for us. We have everything booked in terms of photographer, DJ, hair, flowers, etc. I initially had wanted a videographer but thought it would be too expensive (I was seeing quotes for $6,000+ at the time I looked). My parents and my fiance's parents are helping us with 90% of the venue cost but the rest of what we booked has been up to us in terms of payment.

I recently stumbled on a Videographer online while looking at pictures from my venue. They are $2500 which if my fiance and I split it wouldn't be too horrible to tack on but it is still a lot. We currently have a photobooth lined up which was $600 but we were thinking of cancelling that and putting the money towards a videographer instead. We only put the initial deposit on our DJ and the photobooth is bundled through him so we would be able to change that and remove the booth if we wanted to.

Now, I know most people say "how many times will you watch that". Probably only once a year, yes, but to me those memories seem like they would be so cool to show children, grandchildren, etc, and reminisce on.

My question is: Did you have a videographer at your wedding? Are you happy you did? If you didn't have one, do you wish you did? If you are planning your wedding- are you planning on hiring a videographer or just sticking with photographer?

Can't wait to hear everyone's feed back!

I say if you have the money for such a big day everything is worth it.

We didn’t have one and a year and a half later we have no regrets about that.

I didn’t plan to hire one, but changed course after spending so much time on WW and thinking of how important it is to me to have my vows recorded. I wouldn’t have been able to swing what I was seeing initially, but we ended up hiring an obscenely talented gentleman for just over $1000 and I have no regrets.

I got one! I loved it! I’ve watched mine a bunch of times but at the same time if you’ve got a good photographer you won’t need a videographer then so long as you got moments captured

I already know I’ll regret it if we didn’t have videography, so we did hire one. I watch a ton of wedding trailers and love them so much that I definitely want one of our own. It is really expensive though. If you really had to choose, I would go with videography over a photobooth.

If you have the money, it's totally worth it. Even if you have a small budget, it's still worth it - reach out to your local university, they may have students happy to take on a job for a smaller fee.

One of my coworkers is an up-and-coming filmmaker, and she wanted to get started in weddings as a side gig, so she took the job for a flat fee, and... yeah, one of our best decisions. She did a fabulous job, we've got a highlight short film, and a harddrive of the whole thing.

We just booked a videographer but she was a friend that is in college for video production so she gave us a pretty good deal! $400 for 7 hours. I would say shop around, my fiance and I just wanted a 5-7 minute video "recap" of the wedding just to have as a keepsake.

We paid $2,500 for our videographer and I can't imagine not having the videos. We really appreciate them and so does our family, they are a beautiful memory especially for our ceremony & the speeches.

We forgoed the photobooth to swing the videographer. We couldn't afford a large package, but our guy offered an "elopement package" that covers mainly the ceremony. But we still get raw footage, a video highlight, and then his edit. Having a video to share in the future was super important to us. An alternative for the photobooth, we're having a few Polaroid snaps, a ton of film, an album, and bought wedding props off Amazon. Chose polaroid snap over Fuji instax due to the sd storage. I want to see the pics our guests are taking home! Best of both worlds!

I decided against having one. I just feel like it be a lot of money that I would rarely watch it. I think my cousins had it, but my wedding going to be much smaller than theirs. I don’t know if I will regret it or now I definitely will not be sad that I don’t have to spend even more money on that. My dress was already a lot more than I thought it would be. 😕
