videographer - to have or not to have?

Rachel, on October 27, 2020 at 4:15 PM Posted in Planning 1 18

I have asked SO MANY people and it seems to be an even split between people that regret NOT having a videographer to capture their wedding, and those that wish they would never have wasted the money. Our photographer is a friend and is shooting our wedding as his gift to us but he works solo.

HELPMEPLEASE! I don't want to regret not having one, buuuuuuuut we're on a rather tight budget.

Can you afford a basic GoPro camera to cover it? Then you use the camera for future events

I think Video is one of those things that, if you can make room for it in your budget, you definitely should. I have heard waaaaay too many brides say they regret not having one. And it’s not like you can redo your wedding- Once it’s over, it’s over forever. I would much rather have the video and think it was a waste of money, than not have the video and forever regret not getting it.

You're probably right - my grandmother always used to say that having insurance you don't need is better than needing insurance you don't have.

Whoever wants to? Have a parent or friend hold it for the ceremony and pass it around at the reception

The couples that I had asked regretted having a videographer and the ones that had not gotten them did not regret it because they had good photos. I love having both video and good photos

It really is a personal choice. We did not have professional videography because we didn't feel it was necessary (we had an amazing photographer). We certainly had the budget for one and easily could have hired one, but simply decided not to. No regrets! We did have our DOC use a gopro camera to capture our ceremony, first dance, and speeches. She held it in her hand for the first dance and speeches but she set it down on a hard surface somewhere for the ceremony. It worked out very well

I wouldn't recommend it. I would probably have an ameture film it. I dislike the wedding videography I see today, they appear to be film trailers. I actually prefer the wedding videos I see in the 80s and 90s.

I think it's a personal choice. But I would say if you are able to fit it into the budget do it. I had a small wedding with 25 people and still hired a videographer and photographer. It was the best day of my life and I want those memories to last, and having a video will be like re-watching those memories.

We didn't have one and I don't regret it. Now, we also scaled our wedding down from 130 to 35, but still kept most of the traditional wedding elements (aside from a DJ/dancing).

Yes, it would've been nice if we could've afforded it, but I don't think it's necessary in the same way that photos are. (Just my personal opinion there - I'm a big fan of photos and want to get a bunch printed/framed.)

If you have room in your budget, then absolutely go for it. If not, don't sweat it!

My sister got married in 2007 and now that I am planning my wedding, I asked her what are somethings she wish she didn't differently. The only thing she said is she wishes she would have had a videographer. I didn't even consider one until I asked her. My fiancé and I booked ours a few days later.

As a little girl growing up I found so much joy watching my parents full wedding video over and over. & they’ve been married now for 30 plus years. They have a wedding album but the album doesn’t even do that day justice. With that being said, if you have room leftover in your budget i think it’s completely worth it. When the day is over years later you only have pics/video from that day

Do you have any schools near you that might have film students?

That way, you can keep it in budget, and give someone a chance to start a business!

I got it because I know for sure that I'd probably regret it if I didn't
