Videographer struggles...

Gen, on June 25, 2018 at 10:02 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
For those of you who have seen my previous threads, we are on a tight budget and were not intending to hire a videographer at all, we were just going to ask a couple guests to just film the ceremony.

So our photographer is actually a friend of mine, so to make life easier and just so we didn’t have to worry about making sure we got a good video of our ceremony, I asked him if he could recommend a videographer who would inexpensively just film our 30 minute ceremony and send us the raw footage. He did recommend someone, and put her in contact with me. She sent me a quote last night.

The problem? I looked up her portfolio, and her videos are so... bad. She messes up the most basic things. Her camera work is wobbly. She makes awkward cuts. Her angles are unflattering. I seriously could have a guest film the ceremony with a cellphone and it would probably come out better. I feel terrible saying this, but I just can’t bring myself to hire her because she’s not going to do a good job! But now I’ve gotten myself into a tricky situation since she is the friend of my photographer friend...

Help, what can I tell both of them as to why I’m not using her? Smiley sad Obviously I can’t just tell them that I didn’t think she was good...

I would just say that you appreciate her time, but you’ve decided to go in a different direction. Whether she’s a friend of a friend or not, she’s someone you were considering a business transaction with and you should treat it that way. They’ll both understand.

You could always say you just can't afford it in the end. You could also say you're going to go with someone else. It's completely understandable why you wouldn't want to go with her, don't feel too bad.

I'd just say that you ultimately couldn't find the $ in your budget and decided to go with a friend.

That’s what I was thinking but she was only going to charge us $200 so I don’t know how believable that will be lol

In that industry you get what you paid for and for $200 I would expect a lower quality - I would just say you've gone in a different direction.

Oh yes im aware which is why we aren’t using her lol. We don’t even care about having super high quality, we just want someone to capture it. Just I’m confident a guest with a phone could do better than her, so there’s clearly no point in paying for that

Lol yeah exactly. I think we are just going to ask a friend or two to take videos. I was just hoping to be able to spend a couple hundred bucks for someone to use a nice camera and capture the footage in a very mediocre way, but this woman is really actively bad, and I feel so awful saying that but watching her reel made me cringe
