Videographer Quit

Jennifer, on May 8, 2020 at 8:20 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 3

We hired our DJ, photographer, and videographer through the same company.

We initially only hired the DJ and photographer and signed a contract for those services in April of last year.

At a later date, I opted via an email to add on a videographer (no official contract was signed).

Today, the owner of the company emailed me and said that he found a replacement (not someone that works for their company) and that the contract from our initial videographer now applies to this one. Again, we never signed a contract, this was all agreed upon via email.

The new videographer's work is awful quality. The camera was jerked around and the editing sucked. I don't even think they specialize in weddings because their website mostly mentions converting VHS to DVD. They have NO reviews anywhere from couples about weddings and aren't on any wedding planning sites like here or The Knot.

Since we technically never signed a contract for videography and this was only agreed upon via emails, I am not obligated to use this videographer, right? We never paid a deposit on them or anything either.

I am now desperately trying to find a different videographer for this October!

Have you reached out to the original company to remind them that there was never a new contract drafted that included the videographer add-on? I THINK (in some states) an email can serve as a legal binding contract as long as both parties agree and the terms are laid out in the exchange of emails, BUT I’M NOT A LAWYER. Also, it might be a hard fight for them (the company) anyway because I doubt they included in their emails the terms of what steps would be taken if the original videographer was unavailable.

I would just email them back and let them know that you’re not interested in including the videographer they’re contracting to fill in.
Not sure what style/vibe you’re going for or your budget, but I loved my videographers! Also not sure if they’re available, but if you’re interested I can shoot you over their info!

I am planning on reaching out to the company once I find out if any other videographers are available on our date. If not, I may try to see if they would provide a different alternative of better quality.

Unfortunately, we don't have a very large budget and a lot of the videographers here are out of our price range. However, there are about 5 really great ones in budget that I found on here. I sent messages to them tonight to see if any are available.

That's a very good point that they would not have a great argument since they never laid out the terms and conditions. The only thing they actually confirmed was how many hours they include and sent some samples of their work. They never laid out what happens if the initial videographer was unable to provide their services. That was only laid out in the initial contract I signed for photography and DJ!

Ahh okay! Yeah, ours was a bit of a splurge for us so it might not be too budget-friendly. But good— you at least have options to consider! Smiley smile

Yeah, I honestly doubt they’ll try to argue you with that one. Because that would jeopardize the contracts you have for the DJ/photos. I think the last thing a vendor wants to do is possibly lose more business.
